A Perfect Storm for Price Hikes
The upcoming winter season is seeing a sharp rise in travel demand across the country. After the family-centric festivities of Diwali, many are looking to unwind with a vacation, leading to a predictable but steep increase in hotel occupancy and rates.
According to an analysis by Sciative Solutions, a revenue management firm, the period immediately following Diwali is expected to experience significant price pressure. The trend is not just about pent-up demand; it reflects a broader shift where Indians are prioritizing travel and unique experiences. This enthusiasm, combined with the limited availability of rooms during the peak winter months from November to February, creates the perfect conditions for a seller's market, leaving travellers with fewer budget-friendly options.
Popular Destinations, Premium Prices
The tariff spike is most pronounced in sought-after winter destinations. Goa is expected to see the steepest climb, with premium hotel rates potentially jumping by nearly 42% in the latter half of November compared to the pre-Diwali period. A similar trend is visible in other popular spots. Hill stations like Mussoorie and scenic retreats such as Lonavala, Mahabaleshwar, and Ooty are also bracing for higher rates. For instance, the average displayed rate for a hotel in Lonavala could hover around ₹29,655, while Mahabaleshwar follows at ₹20,324. Even pilgrimage sites like Rishikesh and Puri are seeing a surge in interest, adding to the nationwide price pressure. This pattern indicates that whether you are seeking beaches, mountains, or spiritual solace, your wallet will likely feel the strain.
Understanding the Numbers
The numbers confirm what many travellers fear. Across 13 major destinations, average mid-scale hotel rates are projected to rise by about 27% during the post-Diwali weekend from November 11-15. For premium properties, rates are expected to climb from an average of around ₹25,917 to ₹31,163 during the same period. These prices are anticipated to remain high throughout November, with mid-scale rooms averaging ₹11,670 and premium stays costing approximately ₹32,126. This isn't a temporary blip; industry insiders note that hotel tariffs have generally stabilised at a higher baseline post-pandemic, driven by a demand-supply gap and increased operational costs.
How to Travel Smarter This Winter
While the price hikes are daunting, they don't have to derail your winter travel plans. The most effective strategy is to plan and book well in advance. Data shows a growing number of travellers are booking their festive trips earlier, with some finalising plans at least two months ahead. Flexibility with your travel dates can also lead to significant savings; weekday stays are almost always cheaper than weekend trips. Consider exploring alternative or emerging destinations that are not yet on every traveller's radar. Improved highway connectivity has made drive-to holidays to regional circuits like Ooty-Wayanad or Kasauli-Chail-Kufri more accessible and potentially more affordable. Using price comparison websites and signing up for hotel loyalty programs can also unlock discounts and special offers that aren't advertised widely.
