Wash Wisely, Not Daily
While a sweaty scalp might tempt you to wash your hair daily, overwashing strips it of natural oils, making it more susceptible to frizz. Aim to wash your hair two to three times a week with a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo. These milder cleansers remove
dirt and oil without causing excessive dryness. If you get caught in the rain, make sure to rinse your hair with clean water as soon as possible to wash away pollutants that can cause scalp irritation and damage.
Never Skip Conditioner
Conditioner is your best friend during the monsoon. It smooths the hair's outer layer, or cuticle, locking in moisture and preventing humidity from causing it to swell and frizz. Apply conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends, avoiding the scalp to prevent greasiness. For an extra layer of protection, consider using a leave-in conditioner on damp hair; it forms a barrier against humidity throughout the day.
The Right Drying Technique
How you dry your hair is as important as how you wash it. Vigorously rubbing your hair with a regular cotton towel creates friction and roughs up the cuticle, leading to instant frizz. Instead, switch to a soft microfibre towel or even a cotton t-shirt. Gently pat or squeeze the excess water out. If possible, let your hair air-dry to minimize damage. If you must use a blow-dryer, use a low heat setting and always apply a heat protectant spray first.
Embrace Anti-Frizz Serums
A good anti-frizz serum is a non-negotiable part of a monsoon hair care arsenal. These products typically contain ingredients like silicones that create a lightweight, protective coating over the hair shaft. This barrier blocks moisture from the humid air from penetrating the hair, keeping it smooth and manageable. Apply a few drops to damp hair, focusing on the ends and frizzy areas.
Choose Protective Hairstyles
Leaving your hair open exposes the maximum surface area to humid air, inviting frizz. Opt for simple, protective hairstyles like a loose braid, a chic bun, or a high ponytail. These styles not only keep your hair contained and less prone to frizzing up but also prevent it from getting tangled and breaking, especially on windy, rainy days.
Light Oiling and Weekly Masks
While heavy overnight oiling might be too much for the humid weather, a light oil massage before washing can do wonders. Use oils like coconut or almond to nourish the scalp and strengthen the roots. A weekly deep-conditioning hair mask is also essential to replenish lost moisture. Use a Wide-Toothed Comb
Wet hair is extremely fragile and prone to breakage. Never use a fine-toothed comb or brush on wet strands. Instead, gently detangle your hair in the shower while the conditioner is still in, using your fingers or a wide-toothed comb.
