A New Non-Stop Connection
In a significant move for travellers between India and Canada, Air India is launching a direct flight service between Mumbai and Toronto. This will be the only non-stop connection between the two major cities, eliminating the lengthy layovers in Europe
or the Middle East that are currently the norm for this route. The new service is part of the airline's broader expansion in the Canadian market, reflecting the strong and sustained demand for travel driven by the large Indian diaspora, student traffic, and growing business ties. The addition of this route aims to provide a much more convenient option for passengers, particularly those originating from western and southern India.
The Seasonal Schedule Explained
It is crucial for travellers to note that this is a seasonal service. The flights will operate three times a week during the winter 2026-2027 schedule. Specifically, the service will commence on October 25, 2026, and run until March 26, 2027. According to the schedule, flights will depart from Mumbai on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 4:00 AM local time, arriving in Toronto at 10:00 AM the same day. The return flights from Toronto will also depart on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 1:30 PM local time, arriving in Mumbai the following day at 2:10 PM. This schedule adds nearly 2,000 seats weekly on this popular corridor during the operational period.
Why is the Service Seasonal?
Airlines often introduce seasonal routes to align with periods of peak demand. The India-to-Canada route experiences its highest traffic volume during the winter months. This period coincides with major holidays, festivals like Diwali, the Christmas season, and New Year's, when many individuals classified as VFR (Visiting Friends and Relatives) travel. Student travel also follows a seasonal academic calendar. By operating the flight from late October to late March, Air India can maximize occupancy and profitability, deploying its aircraft on other routes during the off-peak summer season. This strategy allows airlines to efficiently manage their fleet and respond directly to consumer travel patterns.
Aircraft and Onboard Experience
The Mumbai-Toronto route will be serviced by Air India's Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. These planes are set to feature significantly upgraded cabin interiors, a key part of the airline's ongoing transformation under the Tata Group. Passengers can expect a three-class configuration that includes 8 First Class suites with privacy doors, 40 flat-bed seats in Business Class, and 280 seats in Economy. The upgraded aircraft will also offer onboard WiFi connectivity, a welcome amenity on one of the world's long-haul routes. This focus on an enhanced premium experience is a clear indicator of Air India's ambition to compete more aggressively with other global carriers on international routes.
What This Means for Travellers
The primary benefit for passengers is the significant reduction in travel time and the convenience of a non-stop journey. Previously, a trip from Mumbai to Toronto could easily involve one or two stops and extend over 24 hours. This new service offers a direct link. For those planning travel during the winter of 2026-27, it presents a compelling option. However, the seasonal nature means planning is key. Travellers with flexible dates might find better fares outside the absolute peak holiday weeks. Furthermore, anyone planning a return trip after late March 2027 will need to book with a different airline or on a connecting flight, as this service is scheduled to end on March 26.
