Southeast Asia remains a top choice for Indian travellers, and the journey has become significantly simpler. Both Thailand and Malaysia have extended visa-free entry policies for Indian passport holders, eliminating lengthy visa application processes
and fees. However, “visa-free” does not mean “requirement-free.” To ensure a hassle-free experience at immigration, it is crucial to understand the specific rules for each country, as they differ in duration, required documents, and pre-arrival formalities.
Thailand: 30 Days of Smiles, Visa-Free
After some back-and-forth earlier in the year, the Thai government confirmed its policy for Indian tourists. As of mid-July 2026, Indian passport holders can enter Thailand visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism purposes. While a previous 60-day exemption was in place, the new 30-day rule still covers the vast majority of tourist trips. Importantly, this is a visa exemption, not a Visa on Arrival, meaning there is no fee to be paid upon entry. However, all foreign nationals, including visa-exempt Indians, must complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 72 hours before arrival. Be prepared for immigration officials to ask for a passport with at least six months' validity, a confirmed return flight ticket, and proof of accommodation.
Malaysia: Visa-Free Through 2026
Malaysia has extended its visa-free policy for Indian citizens until December 31, 2026. This allows for a stay of up to 30 days for tourism or business purposes. Similar to Thailand, certain conditions apply to ensure smooth entry. The most critical step is completing the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC). This is a mandatory, free online registration that must be submitted within three days before your arrival. It is separate from visa requirements and applies to all foreign visitors. At the immigration counter, you must have your passport with at least six months of validity, a confirmed return flight ticket, and proof of accommodation. Officials may also ask for proof of sufficient funds for your stay.
Key Documents for a Hassle-Free Journey
To avoid any issues at immigration in either country, it's best to have all your documents organised and easily accessible, both in digital and printed formats. Here is a checklist that applies to both destinations: 1. Valid Passport: Must have at least six months of validity from your date of entry. 2. Return/Onward Ticket: Proof that you intend to leave the country within the permitted visa-free period. 3. Proof of Accommodation: Confirmed hotel bookings for your stay. If staying with friends or family, an invitation letter may be useful. 4. Completed Digital Arrival Card: Confirmation of your TDAC for Thailand and MDAC for Malaysia. Keep a screenshot on your phone. 5. Sufficient Funds: While not always checked, be prepared to show you can cover your expenses. This can be in the form of cash, a recent bank statement, or credit card statements.

For currency, it is often better to exchange a small amount at the airport and get better rates from licensed money changers in the city. For local transport, apps like Grab are widely used in both countries and offer a reliable way to get around.
