A Major Boost for Passengers
In a significant move to address rising travel demand, Central Railway (CR) has extended the operation of 216 special train services. This decision provides a welcome relief for passengers, particularly on busy corridors connecting Maharashtra with Uttar
Pradesh and Bihar. Announced in early July 2026, the railway zone has confirmed that this step was taken for the convenience of passengers facing a rush for tickets. The extension includes 150 daily special services and 66 weekly ones, ensuring a substantial increase in available seats and travel options throughout the month and beyond. This proactive measure is expected to ease waitlists and make last-minute travel planning a more viable option for thousands of people.
Key Routes and Extended Services
The extensions cover some of the most sought-after routes. A notable daily service, the Pune-Danapur Special (Train No. 01449), previously scheduled to run until July 15, has now been extended to September 28, 2026. Its corresponding service, the Danapur-Pune Daily Special (Train No. 01450), will also continue until September 30. This adds 75 additional services in each direction, maintaining a crucial link for commuters between these two cities. Several weekly specials have also received extensions. These include: - Lokmanya Tilak Terminus–Kanpur (Train No. 04152): Extended from July 18 to September 26, 2026. In a separate announcement, Central Railway also launched new regular weekly express services between Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Mumbai and Hazur Sahib Nanded. These trains were inaugurated on July 6, 2026, aiming to enhance connectivity within Maharashtra.
What This Means For Your Travel Plans
This large-scale extension of services directly translates into greater convenience and predictability for passengers. With more trains running, the chances of securing a confirmed ticket, even during peak travel periods, are significantly higher. Central Railway has clarified that there will be no changes to the timings, routes, or scheduled stops for these extended trains. This consistency ensures that passengers can rely on the existing timetables for their planning. The coach composition for trains like the Pune-Danapur special will also remain the same, featuring a mix of AC, sleeper, and general class coaches to cater to different passenger needs. The primary benefit is reduced uncertainty and a smoother travel experience, allowing people to plan trips for work, family visits, or holidays with more confidence.
Booking and Planning Your Trip
Reservations for many of these extended services opened in the first week of July. Passengers can book their tickets through all computerised reservation centres and the official IRCTC website or mobile app. For those planning to travel in unreserved coaches, tickets can be purchased through the UTS mobile ticketing system at standard fares. Given the high demand, it is always advisable to book your tickets as early as possible. This series of extensions is part of a broader effort by Indian Railways to manage the summer and monsoon season rush, with thousands of special trips planned nationwide to improve connectivity. Travellers should keep an eye on official announcements from Central Railway for any further updates or new services. However, it's also worth noting that unforeseen circumstances, such as the heavy monsoon rains that caused landslides and cancellations in the Lonavala-Karjat ghat section around July 9, can still lead to disruptions. Always check the latest train status before starting your journey.
