What's Changing for Passengers?
Until recently, the optional travel insurance offered by Indian Railways was exclusively available to passengers who booked their tickets online through the IRCTC website or mobile app. This left a large number of travellers—particularly those in rural
areas or those not comfortable with digital transactions—without access to this low-cost safety net. Following a directive from the Supreme Court, this disparity is being eliminated. As of October 27, 2026, all passengers purchasing tickets from railway station counters will also be able to opt for travel insurance, ensuring equitable access to protection for everyone. This move aims to provide uniform safety benefits, acknowledging that the risks of travel are the same regardless of how a ticket is purchased.
The Incredible Price of Peace of Mind
One of the most compelling features of the railway's travel insurance scheme is its remarkably low cost. For passengers booking online, the premium is a mere 45 paise per person. While the exact premium for counter tickets is yet to be finalised by the Railway Board, it is expected to be similarly nominal. This incredibly low price makes financial protection accessible to travellers across all economic strata. For less than the cost of a platform ticket, passengers can secure significant coverage for themselves and their families against unforeseen tragedies during their journey. The scheme is available to all Indian citizens booking a confirmed or RAC ticket.
Understanding Your Coverage
The insurance policy provides substantial financial support in the event of a train accident or other 'untoward incidents' as defined by the Railways Act. The coverage is comprehensive, addressing the most severe outcomes. In the unfortunate event of a passenger's death during the journey, the nominee is entitled to ₹10 lakh. The same amount, ₹10 lakh, is provided for cases of permanent total disability. For permanent partial disability, the coverage is up to ₹7.5 lakh. Additionally, the policy covers hospitalization expenses for injuries up to ₹2 lakh and provides ₹10,000 for the transportation of mortal remains. This financial cushion can be critical for families dealing with the aftermath of an incident.
How the Scheme Will Work at Counters
The Railway Board is currently finalising the exact mechanism for implementing the scheme at physical ticket counters. For online bookings, passengers simply tick a checkbox to opt-in during the payment process. A similar, streamlined process is expected for counter bookings. Travellers will likely be asked by the booking clerk if they wish to add the insurance for the nominal fee. Once a passenger opts in, the policy details are typically sent via SMS and email, along with a link to fill in nomination details. It is crucial for passengers to provide these details to ensure that in the event of a claim, the compensation can be processed smoothly and disbursed to the correct beneficiary or legal heir.
A Major Step for Passenger Welfare
The expansion of this scheme is a landmark decision that prioritises passenger safety and social security. The directive was influenced by court proceedings following the tragic Balasore train accident in June 2023, which highlighted the need for better safety nets for all passengers. By making insurance accessible to every passenger, Indian Railways is reinforcing its commitment to the well-being of the millions who depend on its network daily. It transforms travel insurance from an optional add-on for the digitally savvy into a fundamental component of passenger care, ensuring that a simple, affordable layer of protection is available to all.
