What is the September Equinox?
Twice a year, in March and September, the Earth reaches a point in its orbit where its axis isn't tilted toward or away from the sun. During the September equinox, the sun shines directly over the equator, bathing both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres
in an almost equal amount of light. For those in the Northern Hemisphere, like India, this event marks the astronomical start of autumn, heralding cooler weather and shorter days. In 2026, this moment will occur on September 23. The word "equinox" itself comes from Latin, meaning "equal night," which sets up the common belief that day and night on this date are precisely 12 hours each. While it's a wonderfully simple idea, the reality on the ground is slightly different.
The Two Reasons for the Imbalance
The reason we get more than 12 hours of daylight on the equinox comes down to two key factors: the way we define sunrise and the bending of light by our atmosphere. First, sunrise isn't timed from when the sun's centre crosses the horizon, but from the moment its upper edge becomes visible. Likewise, sunset is when the sun's last sliver disappears. This definition alone, measuring from the top edge of the solar disk rather than its geometric centre, adds several minutes of daylight to our day. The sun isn't just a point of light in the sky; its size matters in our daily measurements.
A Trick of the Light: Atmospheric Refraction
The second and more dramatic reason is a phenomenon called atmospheric refraction. Earth's atmosphere acts like a giant lens, bending sunlight as it passes through. This bending is most pronounced at the horizon. Because of it, we see the sun's image appear above the horizon a few minutes before the sun is physically there. The same effect happens at sunset, allowing us to see the sun for several minutes after it has already dipped below the horizon. This atmospheric trick essentially gives us extra daylight, adding around six or more minutes of sun-up time, depending on latitude and atmospheric conditions. So, even on a day of supposed perfect balance, our own atmosphere gives daylight a bit of a head start and a delayed finish.
Meet the Equilux: The Real Day of Equal Day and Night
If the equinox isn't the day of equal day and night, then what is? That honour goes to a day called the "equilux," a term derived from Latin for "equal light." This is the actual date when a location experiences as close to 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night as possible. Unlike the equinox, which is a single moment in time for the entire planet, the date of the equilux varies depending on your latitude. For most of the Northern Hemisphere, the autumn equilux occurs a few days after the September equinox. It's on this day that the balance implied by the equinox's name truly manifests in our daily experience.
What the Equinox Means for India
Beyond the science, the autumnal equinox holds cultural and seasonal significance. In India, it heralds the arrival of Sharad Ritu, the autumn season. This period marks a transition from the heavy monsoon rains to clearer skies and more pleasant, milder temperatures. It's a time associated with numerous festivals and celebrations across the country, which are often tied to the harvest and the changing environment. While the day itself is an astronomical event, its arrival is felt in the subtle shift in the air, the quality of the light, and the gradual shortening of our days as we move deeper into the latter half of the year, a cycle of renewal and preparation that has been observed for centuries.
