We all know we need to drink water. It lubricates our joints, regulates body temperature, and transports nutrients to our cells. But when we talk about immunity, the role of water becomes even more critical. Our immune system relies on a well-hydrated

Resources that would normally be used for surveillance and fighting off other everyday infections are diverted to combat the immediate threat in your gut. Instead, they create a state of chronic, low-grade inflammation in the body. This constant inflammation keeps the immune system perpetually 'on' but in an ineffective way. Waterborne diseases are a major public health concern, disproportionately affecting children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Diarrhoeal diseases, primarily caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation, are a leading cause of childhood mortality. This isn't just a rural issue; ageing urban infrastructure and intermittent water supply can lead to contamination in city pipes, making even tap water a potential risk if not properly treated before consumption. The burden of disease from unsafe water places a massive strain not just on individual immune systems, but on the nation's entire healthcare infrastructure.
Securing Your Immunity at Home
While large-scale solutions are a government responsibility, you can take practical steps to protect your family. The most time-tested method is boiling. Bringing water to a rolling boil for at least one minute kills most bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. For those with access to reliable electricity, modern water purifiers offer multi-stage protection. A good system will use a combination of sediment filters (to remove physical dirt), activated carbon filters (to remove chlorine and organic chemicals), and a final purification step like Reverse Osmosis (RO) or Ultraviolet (UV) light. RO is effective against dissolved salts and heavy metals, while UV is excellent at neutralising microorganisms.
