Decoding the 75% Statistic
The eye-catching "75%" figure comes from TeamLease EdTech's recent Career Outlook Report for the latter half of 2026. It signifies the percentage of employers surveyed who have a positive intent to hire freshers, an increase from 73% in the first half of the year.
This indicates a strong and growing appetite for entry-level talent in the Indian economy. However, it's not a blanket guarantee of a job. The opportunities are becoming more concentrated in specific industries, while some traditional sectors are becoming more cautious with their hiring plans. This shift means it's more important than ever for young job seekers to know which doors are wide open.
The New Leaders: E-commerce, Retail, and Manufacturing
The biggest story in fresher hiring is the surge in demand from consumer-driven and industrial sectors. E-commerce and retail now lead the pack, with an impressive 93% of employers in these fields looking to hire fresh talent. Manufacturing is not far behind, with hiring intent rising to 89%. Sectors like Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) and Travel & Hospitality are also showing robust growth in their entry-level recruitment plans. This trend highlights a significant market realignment. While the tech sector recalibrates, the engines of domestic consumption and industrial growth are creating a wealth of new roles for graduates.
What's Happening with the IT Sector?
For years, the Information Technology sector was the default destination for a large number of Indian graduates. While IT still has a high hiring intent at 76%, this figure has seen a notable decline from 81% in the first half of 2026. This doesn't mean IT jobs have vanished, but the era of massive, indiscriminate bulk hiring seems to be over. Companies are now highly selective, targeting candidates with specific, in-demand skills. The focus has shifted from just having a degree to possessing practical, job-ready competencies, particularly in high-growth areas like AI and cloud computing.
The Geographic Hotspots for Fresher Jobs
Opportunity is also geographically concentrated. Bengaluru remains the undisputed leader, with 89% of employers intending to hire freshers. Mumbai follows at a strong 75%, with Chennai close behind at 71%. Hyderabad also features prominently with a 60% hiring intent. While these metros continue to be the primary job hubs, hiring in Tier-2 cities is also gaining significant momentum, with locations like Jaipur and Ahmedabad showing strong growth in entry-level recruitment. This trend suggests that while major cities offer the most opportunities, the job market is gradually becoming more distributed across the country.
The Skills That Will Get You Hired
Across all sectors, the message from employers is clear: skills matter more than ever. Technical skills in areas like Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, data analytics, cloud computing, and cybersecurity are in high demand, even for roles outside the core IT industry. Employers are specifically looking for freshers with knowledge of AI applications, semiconductor design, and data centre operations. However, hard skills are only part of the equation. Soft skills like communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability are consistently ranked as essential by recruiters. In a world increasingly shaped by automation, these uniquely human skills are becoming a key differentiator.
