What is El Niño and Why Does It Matter?
El Niño is a climate pattern characterized by the unusual warming of surface waters in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. While it happens thousands of kilometers away, it disrupts global atmospheric circulation, altering wind and rainfall patterns worldwide.
For India, its most critical effect is on the southwest monsoon, which provides about 80% of the country's annual rainfall. A strong El Niño can weaken these crucial monsoon winds, leading to less rainfall, a phenomenon historically linked to droughts and drier-than-average conditions across the subcontinent.
The 2026 'Super' El Niño Forecast
Forecasts for late 2026 and early 2027 point towards a particularly strong, or 'super', El Niño event. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) have indicated a very high probability that the event will intensify and persist through the winter. Some models suggest it could become one of the strongest El Niño events on record since 1950. This forecast has put governments across Asia on high alert, preparing for significant weather disruptions. For India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected a below-normal monsoon season, with a rainfall deficit of around 10% from the long-period average, and a 60% probability of deficient rainfall.
The Direct Hit on Food Prices
A weakened monsoon directly translates to agricultural stress. With rain-fed agriculture accounting for a significant portion of India's food production, reduced rainfall threatens the yields of critical kharif (monsoon) crops like rice, pulses, maize, and cotton. Even with marginally lower sowing acreage, uneven rainfall distribution and long dry spells are expected to cut overall production. This tightening of supply inevitably puts upward pressure on food prices. Domestic prices for key crops like maize and arhar have already seen a significant rise, reflecting market anxiety. For the average household, this could mean a noticeable increase in the monthly grocery bill, as the cost of staples like vegetables, cereals, and edible oils climbs.
A Growing Strain on Water Supply
The impact of a poor monsoon extends beyond the fields to our taps. The June-to-September rains are vital for replenishing India’s reservoirs, which are crucial for drinking water, sanitation, and generating hydroelectric power. A significant rainfall deficit means these reservoirs don't fill up adequately, leading to potential water scarcity in the following months. Some states are already bracing for severe drought conditions. This not only affects urban water supplies but also impacts the subsequent rabi (winter) crop season, which relies heavily on water stored in reservoirs for irrigation. The combination of water stress and erratic rainfall patterns poses a serious challenge to the country's water security infrastructure.
How India is Preparing
Recognizing the significant risks, the Indian government has initiated a proactive stance focused on preparedness. The Union Agriculture Ministry has described its strategy as creating a “protective shield for farmers”. This involves identifying hundreds of agriculturally vulnerable districts for prioritized monitoring and intervention. Authorities are encouraging farmers in these areas to plant low-water, short-duration crops such as millets and pulses. Efforts are also underway to bolster water conservation and harvesting infrastructure. These contingency plans aim to mitigate the worst effects of the expected dry spell, manage food stocks to control price volatility, and support farmers through a challenging season.
