The Science of a Cool Night's Sleep
Your body is hardwired to associate a drop in temperature with sleep. In the hours leading up to your natural bedtime, your internal body clock, or circadian rhythm, signals your core body temperature to begin falling. This process, known as thermoregulation,
is a crucial trigger for sleep. Your body actively pushes heat away from its core to your hands and feet, which is why your extremities might feel warm as you get drowsy. A cool room aids this natural process, helping you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. If your room is too warm, it works against your body's efforts to cool down, which can delay sleep onset and lead to a more restless night.
Finding the Goldilocks Zone
So, what is the perfect temperature? Most sleep experts and research institutions agree that the optimal range for most adults is between 15.5 to 19.5 degrees Celsius (60 to 67 degrees Fahrenheit). Some studies suggest a slightly warmer range of 18 to 20 degrees Celsius is the sweet spot. While this might seem surprisingly cool to some, this range is believed to best support restorative sleep stages, including deep sleep and REM sleep. Anything significantly above this can lead to what experts call 'toasty' conditions that promote insomnia. Of course, this is a general guideline; factors like your age, bedding, and personal preference mean you may need to experiment to find your own ideal number within that range.
The Problem with a Toasty Room
Sleeping in a room that's too warm does more than just make you uncomfortable. High ambient temperatures are strongly linked to increased wakefulness and a reduction in both deep sleep and REM sleep. REM sleep, in particular, is vulnerable because your body's ability to regulate its temperature is largely suspended during this stage. This means you are more dependent on the room's environment to stay comfortable. Heat exposure can lead to more frequent awakenings, tossing and turning, and less time spent in the most mentally and physically restorative phases of sleep. Research analyzing millions of nights of sleep found that as bedroom temperatures rise above the optimal range, sleep efficiency drops, it takes longer to fall asleep, and total sleep time decreases.
Can It Be Too Cold?
While a cool room is beneficial, there is a point where it becomes counterproductive. If your room is so cold that you're shivering or tensing up to stay warm, your body is working too hard to maintain its core temperature, which can also disrupt sleep. Temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius (60°F) can make it harder to fall asleep and may negatively affect your cardiovascular system. The goal is to create a cool, comfortable cave, not an icebox. The key is to find a balance where your body isn't fighting to either shed heat or generate it.
Practical Tips for Temperature Control
Optimising your sleep environment doesn't have to be complicated. Start by setting your thermostat within the recommended 15.5 to 19.5-degree Celsius range. If you don't have air conditioning, use fans to create airflow. On hot days, keep blinds and curtains closed to block out the sun's heat. Consider your bedding and sleepwear; breathable, natural fibres like cotton or linen are better at wicking away moisture than synthetics, which can trap heat. An interesting but counterintuitive tip is to take a warm bath or shower 60 to 90 minutes before bed. This raises your body temperature, and the subsequent rapid cool-down period can powerfully signal to your brain that it's time for sleep.
