The Science of a Sluggish Day
It’s a common feeling—sacrificing an hour or two of sleep to finish work, watch another episode, or just scroll through our phones. While it might not feel like a huge deal, a recent study from Columbia University highlights how this habit adds up. Researchers
conducted a detailed experiment involving 95 adults who normally slept seven to eight hours a night. They created two six-week phases: in one, participants followed their usual sleep schedule. In the other, they were asked to delay their bedtime by 90 minutes, resulting in about 80 minutes less sleep per night on average. Throughout both periods, scientists used wrist monitors to track sleep and physical activity, giving them a clear picture of how this modest sleep debt affected daily life. The study was designed to mimic the kind of chronic, mild sleep loss that many adults experience regularly, rather than extreme sleep deprivation.
Less Sleep, Fewer Steps
The results were clear and concerning. During the six-week sleep restriction period, participants didn't just feel more tired; they became more sedentary. On average, their inactive time increased by about 17 minutes per day. For men and postmenopausal women, the effect was even more pronounced, with sedentary time increasing by nearly 30 minutes daily. What's striking is that this happened even though participants were awake for longer. Instead of using that extra time for activity, they spent it sitting down. This makes intuitive sense—when you’re tired, the motivation to exercise or even just walk around plummets. The study also found that this period of shorter sleep was associated with an average weight gain of about one pound (around 0.45 kg) and a slight increase in waist circumference. While that might not sound dramatic, researchers note that over a full year, such a trend could lead to clinically significant weight gain and related health issues.
Why We Stop Moving When We're Tired
The connection between sleep and movement isn't just about having low energy. Sleep deprivation affects the body on a deeper, hormonal level. It can disrupt the balance of hormones that regulate appetite, like ghrelin (which makes you hungry) and leptin (which makes you feel full), often leading to cravings for high-calorie foods. But beyond diet, poor sleep impacts the brain's frontal lobe, which governs things like impulse control and decision-making. This can make it harder to stick to your intention to exercise. Furthermore, perceived exertion increases when you're sleep-deprived. This means the same workout can feel significantly harder than it would if you were well-rested, making you more likely to skip it altogether. Chronic sleep loss also impairs muscle recovery and repair, which can lead to sluggish workouts and even a higher risk of injury.
Breaking the Vicious Cycle
This creates a negative feedback loop that can be tough to escape. Less sleep leads to less physical activity, and a lack of physical activity can, in turn, make it harder to get good quality sleep. Over time, this combination of increased sedentary behaviour and potential weight gain elevates the risk for chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. In fact, previous analysis of this same study group showed that mild sleep restriction increased insulin resistance, a key risk factor for diabetes, particularly in women. The good news is that this cycle can be broken. The findings underscore the power of prioritising sleep not just for mental clarity, but as a foundational pillar of an active and healthy lifestyle.
