A New Daily Connection to South Konkan
In a move that addresses a long-standing demand, Central Railway has launched a new daily express train connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai with Sawantwadi Road. This service significantly enhances direct connectivity to the
southern parts of the Konkan, a region popular for its picturesque towns and tourist spots. The inaugural service was flagged off on September 3, 2026, marking a major step in bolstering the rail network between Mumbai and key Konkan districts. Covering a distance of approximately 510 kilometres, this train is designed to serve a wide range of passengers, including tourists, students, and families visiting their hometowns. The service is expected to ease pressure on other Konkan-bound trains and provide a reliable daily travel option.
Route, Timings, and Key Stops
The new daily express, operating as Train No. 15087 from CSMT and Train No. 15088 from Sawantwadi Road, provides a convenient overnight journey from Mumbai. The train is scheduled to depart CSMT at 11:55 PM and arrive at Sawantwadi Road at 2:15 PM the next day. The return service leaves Sawantwadi Road at 5:20 PM, reaching CSMT at 6:40 AM the following morning, making it ideal for weekend trips and for those who need to be back in the city for work. The train features an extensive list of 22 stoppages, ensuring comprehensive connectivity across the region. Major halts include Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Roha, Khed, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavli, Sindhudurg, and Kudal, linking the Mumbai Metropolitan Region with important destinations in the Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts.
Boost for Ganpati Festival Travellers
The timing of these new services aligns perfectly with the heavy travel season for Ganesh Chaturthi. To manage the immense festive rush, Indian Railways has announced a massive rollout of special trains. For 2026, over 350 special services are being operated for the festival, with Central Railway alone running 262 of them. These include 200 reserved and 62 unreserved trains starting from September 9, 2026, connecting Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur to destinations like Sawantwadi Road, Ratnagiri, and Madgaon. Central Railway has already reported over 1.17 lakh bookings on these special services, highlighting the critical need for this additional capacity. Four additional special services between CSMT and Madgaon have also been scheduled for September 11 and 13 to provide further relief.

Given the high demand, especially during the festival period, it is advisable to book your tickets well in advance. For the unreserved special trains, tickets can be purchased through the UTS mobile app or at station counters. Central Railway has also taken measures to manage crowds at major stations by setting up extra ticket counters and holding areas, and advises passengers to arrive at least 30 minutes before their train's departure to avoid any last-minute hassles.
