Meeting the Monsoon Rush
July is a notoriously busy month for Indian Railways. The combination of school holidays, monsoon-season travel, and various regional festivals leads to a massive spike in demand for train tickets. This often results in long waiting lists and crowded
coaches, making travel a challenge for millions. To combat this predictable surge, Central Railway has proactively extended the operational period of hundreds of special train services, a move designed to enhance passenger convenience and ensure better connectivity across its network. This expansion is part of a broader strategy by Indian Railways to manage seasonal demand, which has seen a significant increase in special services this summer compared to previous years.
Over 200 Services Extended
In a recent announcement, Central Railway confirmed the extension of 216 special train services. This includes a mix of 150 daily special services and 66 weekly services, targeting some of the most high-demand corridors. The decision was taken explicitly to cater to the increasing travel demand witnessed in the region. These extensions primarily benefit passengers travelling between Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, which are among the busiest sectors during this period. Officials have stated that the timings, routes, and scheduled stops for these extended trains will remain unchanged, ensuring consistency for passengers who may have already planned their journeys.
Key Daily Route: Pune to Danapur
A major highlight of the extension is the continued operation of the Pune-Danapur daily special. Train No. 01449, which was originally scheduled to run until July 15, will now be extended to operate until September 28, 2026. This adds a crucial 75 additional services on this popular route. In the return direction, Train No. 01450 from Danapur to Pune, previously running until July 17, has been extended through September 30, 2026. These trains will maintain their existing coach composition, which includes a mix of AC 2-tier, AC 3-tier, Sleeper Class, and General Second Class coaches, catering to travellers across different budget segments.
Weekly Specials for Added Capacity
Alongside the daily services, several weekly special trains have also received an extension, providing further options for travellers. These include services connecting major hubs like Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Mumbai with Kanpur and Hadapsar with Veerangana Laxmibai Jhansi. For example, the LTT-Kanpur weekly special (Train No. 04152) will now run until late September 2026. These weekly trains are vital for handling the weekend and holiday rush, offering reserved travel options and preventing the overcrowding of regular services. The composition of these trains also remains consistent, featuring a blend of air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned coaches.
How to Book and Stay Updated
Reservations for these extended services opened in the first week of July and are available through all computerised reservation centres and the official IRCTC website (www.irctc.co.in). For passengers opting for unreserved General Second Class coaches, tickets can be purchased via the UTS mobile ticketing system at standard fares. Given the high demand, travellers are advised to book their tickets well in advance. For the most accurate, real-time information on train schedules, delays, or platform changes, passengers should use the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app or visit the official Indian Railways enquiry portal.
