Why Rainy Weather is a Challenge for Skin
The primary culprit during the rainy season is the dramatic increase in humidity. High humidity can make your skin feel oily and sticky because sweat doesn't evaporate as quickly. [9] This creates a perfect storm: excess sebum production mixes with sweat and environmental
pollutants, leading to clogged pores, blackheads, and acne breakouts. [2, 7, 11] Furthermore, the constant dampness creates an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, increasing the risk of skin infections like folliculitis or aggravating conditions like eczema. [2, 7] This doesn't mean your skin is automatically hydrated; in fact, the skin's barrier can be disrupted, making it more sensitive. [2, 8] Your regular skincare routine might suddenly feel too heavy or just not as effective.
Cleanse Thoroughly, But Gently
Cleansing becomes paramount during the monsoon to remove the extra oil, dirt, and sweat that accumulates. A common mistake is using harsh, stripping cleansers to combat the feeling of greasiness. This can backfire, damaging your skin's protective barrier and prompting it to produce even more oil. Instead, opt for a gentle, pH-balanced, and soap-free cleanser twice a day. [13, 19] For those who wear makeup or feel particularly grimy, consider double cleansing in the evening. Start with an oil-based balm to dissolve sunscreen and makeup, followed by a gentle foaming wash to purify the skin without stripping it. [22] Ingredients like salicylic acid, tea tree oil, or neem can be beneficial for controlling oil and preventing breakouts. [5, 10, 21]
Exfoliate, But Don’t Overdo It
With pores more likely to get clogged, exfoliation is key to sloughing off dead skin cells and preventing breakouts. However, aggressive scrubbing can irritate skin that's already sensitised by the humid conditions. Gentle is the operative word. Aim to exfoliate just once or twice a week. [4, 10] Chemical exfoliants containing Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) or Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) are often a better choice than harsh physical scrubs. [4, 14] They effectively dissolve the bonds holding dead skin cells to the surface, promoting cell turnover and revealing a brighter complexion. [13]
Switch to a Lightweight Moisturiser
It’s a common myth that oily or sticky skin doesn't need a moisturiser, especially in humid weather. Skipping this step can dehydrate your skin, causing it to produce even more oil to compensate. The trick is to switch from heavy, oil-based creams to lighter formulations. [25] Look for non-comedogenic (meaning it won't clog pores), water-based or gel-based moisturisers. [4, 10] Ingredients like hyaluronic acid are excellent, as they act as humectants, drawing moisture from the humid air into your skin to keep it hydrated without feeling greasy. [5, 13, 17] Applying moisturiser to slightly damp skin can also help lock in hydration more effectively. [5]
Sunscreen Is Still a Non-Negotiable
This is the tip that cannot be repeated enough: do not skip sunscreen, even on cloudy, overcast, or rainy days. Up to 80% of the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate through clouds and cause significant skin damage. [1, 4, 12] These UVA rays, present year-round, are a primary cause of premature ageing, including fine lines and dark spots. [6, 16] To avoid a greasy feel, choose a lightweight, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. [4, 19] Look for gel-based or water-resistant formulas that feel comfortable on the skin and won’t clog pores. [14]
Adapt Your Makeup and Lifestyle
Heavy, full-coverage foundations can feel suffocating in high humidity and are more likely to clog pores. [10] Consider this season an opportunity to embrace a more minimal makeup look. Opt for lightweight alternatives like tinted moisturisers or BB creams. If you can, go makeup-free to let your skin breathe. [19] It’s also wise to avoid touching your face unnecessarily, as this can transfer dirt and bacteria. [4, 10] Lastly, what you eat can impact your skin. Reducing excessively oily and fried foods and incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables can help keep your skin balanced and glowing from the inside out. [10]
