Thailand: A Shift from Visa Exemption to VOA
For years, Thailand has been a favourite destination for Indian travellers, thanks in large part to its friendly visa policies. Recently, a 60-day visa exemption scheme was in place, making spontaneous trips easier than ever. However, the Thai Cabinet
has approved significant changes that will soon come into effect. India is slated to be moved from the visa exemption list back to the Visa on Arrival (VOA) category. Although the 60-day visa-free entry remains active as of mid-August 2026, this is a temporary state until the new rules are published in the Royal Gazette. Once implemented, Indian tourists will likely face a shorter stay period and will need to obtain a visa upon landing, which could involve fees and additional paperwork at the airport. Furthermore, all travellers must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before their journey.
Serbia: The End of Visa-Free Travel
In a significant policy shift, Serbia has discontinued its visa-free travel arrangement for Indian passport holders. Previously, Indians could enter Serbia and stay for up to 30 days without needing a visa, which made it an accessible European destination. As of early 2023, this is no longer the case. Indian nationals are now required to apply for a Serbian visa before their departure. This means a trip to Serbia now requires more advance planning, including submitting a visa application at a Serbian embassy or consulate, providing necessary documents like an invitation letter or proof of paid travel arrangements, and ensuring you have proof of sufficient funds for your stay. However, there's an important exception: Indian passport holders who possess a valid Schengen, UK, or US visa may still be permitted to enter Serbia without a Serbian visa for up to 90 days.
Malaysia: Visa-Free, But With a Mandatory Digital Step
Malaysia continues to be a welcoming destination for Indian tourists, extending its visa-free entry program until December 31, 2026. This allows for stays of up to 30 days for tourism purposes without needing to apply for a visa in advance. While this is great news, a crucial new requirement has been added that travellers must not overlook: the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC). All foreign visitors, including those from India, must complete the MDAC online within three days prior to their arrival in Malaysia. This is a mandatory step, and failure to complete it can result in complications or even denial of entry at immigration. So, while you don't need a visa sticker, you absolutely need to complete this digital pre-arrival formality. Travellers should also be prepared to show their return ticket, proof of accommodation, and sufficient funds.
Kenya: A New Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) System
Kenya, a dream destination for wildlife and safari lovers, has overhauled its entry system. The country has moved away from traditional visas and the previous e-visa system for many nationalities, implementing a mandatory Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) for all visitors, including Indian citizens. This new system requires every traveller, including infants and children, to obtain an approved eTA before starting their journey. The application is done online and generally requires a valid passport, a recent photo, contact information, and details of your travel itinerary and accommodation. While the process is digital and relatively quick—often approved within a few business days—it is not instantaneous and must be completed prior to travel. Kenya no longer offers a visa-on-arrival option for Indian citizens, so securing your eTA in advance is essential for entry.
