The King and His Heir
The biggest talking point for 'King' is the on-screen collaboration between Shah Rukh Khan and his daughter, Suhana Khan, in her theatrical debut. While she made her acting debut in the 2023 streaming film 'The Archies', 'King' will mark her first appearance
on the big screen. Interestingly, reports suggest they won't be playing father and daughter. Instead, the film is said to follow the story of a hardened assassin, played by SRK, who takes a young woman (Suhana) under his wing as his protégé after her family is killed. The plot is reportedly inspired by the 1994 French classic 'Léon: The Professional'. Shah Rukh is expected to appear in a full-fledged lead role as a sleek, morally complex character, moving away from traditional heroic portrayals.
A Powerhouse Production Team
Behind the camera, 'King' is helmed by director Siddharth Anand, who previously directed SRK in the blockbuster 'Pathaan'. Anand is also producing the film under his Marflix Pictures banner, alongside Gauri Khan for Red Chillies Entertainment. While Sujoy Ghosh, known for directing 'Kahaani', was initially attached to direct, he amicably parted ways with the project due to creative differences as the film's scale expanded, with Anand stepping in. Ghosh remains credited as a writer. Anand's team is expected to design slick, large-scale action sequences, promising a different flavor of action from 'Pathaan' and 'Jawan', with a focus on chase sequences and a strong emotional core.
An All-Star Ensemble Cast
Beyond its two leads, 'King' boasts a massive and impressive ensemble cast. Abhishek Bachchan is reportedly set to play the primary antagonist. The star-studded lineup also includes Deepika Padukone, marking her sixth collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan, along with celebrated actors like Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Rani Mukerji, and Jaideep Ahlawat. With a reported budget of ₹450 crore, the film is positioned as one of the most expensive and ambitious projects in Indian cinema.
The Confirmed Christmas Release
Mark your calendars: 'King' is officially scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on December 24, 2026. This positions the film for a lucrative run during the Christmas and New Year holiday period. Shah Rukh Khan himself recently confirmed the date during an #AskSRK session on X (formerly Twitter), putting an end to speculation that the film might be postponed. The film will arrive in a crowded holiday window, releasing shortly after major Hollywood titles like 'Avengers: Doomsday' and 'Dune: Part Three'. However, the makers are confident in the film's standing, with SRK humorously noting they are the 'tasty tikki' in the center of the sandwich.
