The Great Wait: A Tale of Five Cities
The wait time for a first-time B1/B2 visitor visa interview is not uniform across India. As of mid-2026, the situation creates a clear geographical advantage for some. Consulates in cities like Chennai and Kolkata often have significantly shorter waiting
periods compared to the high-demand centres of Mumbai and New Delhi. For instance, applicants in Chennai might find an appointment in roughly four months, while those in Mumbai could be looking at a wait of seven months or more. Hyderabad and New Delhi typically fall in the middle range. These disparities are due to a combination of high application volume, post-pandemic backlogs, and the specific processing capacity of each consulate. This has turned the visa application process into a postcode lottery, where your location heavily influences your travel timeline.
Why Your Application City Matters
The core reasons for these dramatic differences in wait times are straightforward: demand and capacity. Cities like Mumbai and Delhi serve enormous populations with a high demand for US travel, overwhelming the available appointment slots. In contrast, consulates like Kolkata may serve a smaller applicant pool, resulting in shorter queues. Furthermore, each consular post has different staffing levels and operational capabilities. The US Mission to India has been actively working to increase its processing capacity, having issued a record number of visas in recent years, but the backlog and immense demand mean that bottlenecks persist. Student and work visas (F1, H-1B) are often prioritised and see much shorter wait times, but the B1/B2 category for tourism and business continues to experience the longest delays.
Strategies for Frustrated Applicants
While the long waits can be discouraging, applicants are not entirely without options. The most crucial strategy is to plan well in advance—ideally 6 to 12 months before your intended travel date. A key tip is that Indian applicants can schedule their interview at any of the five consulates in India, not just the one closest to their home. If you have the flexibility to travel, booking an appointment in a city with a shorter wait time, like Chennai or Kolkata, is a valid and widely used strategy. Regularly checking the official CGI Federal booking portal is also essential. Applicants often cancel or reschedule, opening up earlier slots. Persistence in checking the system can sometimes yield an appointment much sooner than the initial estimate.
The Dropbox and Expedite Options
For those renewing their visa, the Interview Waiver program, commonly known as Dropbox, is the fastest path. Eligible applicants who are renewing the same type of visa that expired within the last 12 months can submit their documents without an in-person interview. This process is significantly faster, often taking just a few weeks. For those with urgent travel needs, such as a medical emergency or critical business meeting, there is an option to request an expedited appointment. However, this is not a guaranteed route. You must first book a regular appointment and then submit a formal request with strong evidence proving the urgency of your travel. Approval is at the discretion of the consulate and is granted only for genuinely unforeseen and critical situations.
