The New Mumbai-Sawantwadi Express
Indian Railways has given the green light to a new daily express service connecting Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) with Sawantwadi Road in the southern Konkan region. This move is set to be a major convenience for thousands of passengers,
whether they are travelling for tourism, business, education, or visiting family. The service, operating as train number 15087 from Mumbai and 15088 on the return journey, will cover a distance of approximately 510 kilometres. By establishing a reliable, daily link, the train aims to ease pressure on the busy Mumbai-Konkan corridor and support the region's economic activity by connecting the financial capital with several coastal districts.
Route, Stoppages, and Schedule
One of the most significant features of this new service is its extensive list of stops, designed to improve access to numerous towns along the Konkan coast. The train will have 22 commercial halts, a considerable number for an express service, making it a vital link for local commuters and not just long-distance travellers. Key stops after departing CSMT include Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Pen, Roha, Mangaon, Khed, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavli, Sindhudurg, and Kudal before terminating at Sawantwadi Road. This comprehensive route ensures that passengers from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region have direct access deep into southern Maharashtra. While the final detailed timetable is yet to be released by the railways, the daily nature of the service is a confirmed advantage over other weekly or bi-weekly trains on the route.

The journey doesn't start when the train moves; it begins at the station. In recent years, Konkan Railway has been focused on upgrading passenger amenities. Travellers using this new service can expect to find improved facilities at several key stations. For instance, major hubs like Ratnagiri now feature executive lounges. Other stations, including Thivim and Udupi, have recently introduced modern, QR-based digital locker facilities, allowing passengers to securely store luggage around the clock. Efforts have also been made to improve platform surfaces, add shelters, and install better signage at various stations along the line. For those needing to stay connected or manage their travel plans, many stations now offer services like UPI-based QR ticketing, and some even have retiring rooms and dormitories available for booking. These upgrades aim to create a more comfortable and convenient pre- and post-journey experience.
Mastering the Last Mile: Getting To and From the Station

For tourists, reaching the Konkan's famous beaches, forts, and temples from the station is a key part of the plan. Pre-paid taxi counters are not always available, so it's wise to have a clear idea of the expected fare to your destination. However, bus frequency can vary, especially in the evenings.
