The Flight That Changes Everything
Until recently, a trip from Delhi to the seaside Union Territory of Daman involved a lengthy 15-hour train ride or a flight to a nearby city like Surat followed by a multi-hour road journey. That long-standing travel headache is now a thing of the past.
Alliance Air has launched direct flights from Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport to Daman's NAMO Airport. The new service drastically cuts down travel time, with a flight duration of approximately two hours and 50 minutes. This development transforms Daman from a destination requiring long-haul commitment into a genuinely accessible option for a short, spontaneous break from the capital. Previously, the journey could consume the better part of a day; now, you can leave Delhi in the morning and be by the sea before lunch.
From Touchdown to Town
One of the key advantages of flying directly to Daman is the airport's proximity to the main town areas. Unlike landing in Surat or taking a train to Vapi, you arrive right in the heart of the action, saving precious hours. From Daman's airport, located in Nani Daman, reaching popular hotels and beaches is a relatively quick affair. Local transport options include auto-rickshaws and unmetered taxis. Negotiating fares is common, and for a full day of sightseeing, hiring a private taxi can be a cost-effective choice, often costing around Rs. 600 for a tour of the main spots. Ride-sharing apps like Uber also operate in the area, providing another convenient option for getting around. This ease of local travel is crucial for a short trip, ensuring you spend less time in transit and more time exploring.
Crafting the Perfect 48-Hour Itinerary
With only a weekend to spare, a focused itinerary is essential. Most travellers find that two full days are sufficient to cover Daman's main highlights. A balanced plan could look something like this: Day 1: Arrive in the morning, check into your hotel, and head straight to Jampore Beach. Known for its calm, blackish mud-coloured water and numerous water sports, it's a great place to relax or get active with jet skiing and parasailing. In the afternoon, dive into history at the Moti Daman Fort, which houses colonial-era structures like the impressive Cathedral of Bom Jesus. End your day at Devka Beach, which is famous for its scenic promenade and sunset views rather than swimming. Day 2: Spend the morning exploring Nani Daman, visiting St. Jerome Fort and the lively waterfront jetty. Afterwards, consider a boat ride at the man-made Mirasol Lake Garden for a change of pace. Before heading to the airport, squeeze in some souvenir shopping at local markets, which are known for handicrafts.
Where to Stay and What to Expect
Daman offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit different budgets, from luxury beachside resorts to more modest guesthouses and hotels. Areas around Devka Beach and Jampore Beach are popular with tourists for their proximity to the sea and restaurants. The town is divided by the Daman Ganga River into Moti Daman (Big Daman) and Nani Daman (Little Daman). Moti Daman is quieter and contains most of the Portuguese architecture, while Nani Daman is livelier with markets and restaurants. Choosing where to stay depends on your preference for historic charm or bustling activity. For a short trip, staying near the main attractions in either Nani or Moti Daman can help minimise travel time.
Understanding the Value Proposition
The new direct flight is not necessarily the cheapest way to reach Daman. A flight ticket can cost around ₹6,500 to ₹7,000, which is more expensive than a train journey. However, the value lies in the time saved—more than 10 hours compared to the train. For a weekend warrior, that time is invaluable. It represents an entire extra day of vacation that would otherwise be spent in transit. When you factor in the cost of a full day's sightseeing, meals, and accommodation, the slightly higher flight price is easily justified by the expanded leisure time. This makes the flight a significant value addition for anyone looking to maximise a short break.
