Know Your UPI Transaction Limits
Before you start your festive shopping, it's crucial to know your UPI transaction limits. Most banks and UPI apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm have a standard daily limit of ₹1 lakh. However, this can vary by bank, with some having lower caps.
For new UPI users, the limit is often restricted to ₹5,000 for the first 24 hours. Planning a big-ticket purchase like a new phone or home appliance? Check your app's settings beforehand. For specific categories like insurance or education payments, the limits can be higher, up to ₹5 lakh. Knowing these limits will help you plan large payments and avoid transaction failures during a crucial purchase.
Secure Your Digital Wallet
The festive season sees a massive spike in online scams. Your first line of defence is basic security hygiene. Never share your UPI PIN with anyone; it is only required for sending money, not receiving it. Be extremely cautious of 'Request Money' notifications or QR codes sent to you for receiving payments—these are common scam tactics. Always verify the recipient's name on the screen before confirming a payment. Also, ensure your phone has a strong screen lock and that your UPI and banking apps are updated to the latest version, as these updates often contain critical security patches.
Beware of 'Too Good To Be True' Offers
Scammers are particularly active during Diwali, creating fake e-commerce websites and social media ads with unbelievable discounts. These sites often impersonate well-known brands. Red flags include unusual website URLs (like 'flipkart-diwali-offer.com' instead of 'flipkart.com'), poor grammar, and requests for direct bank transfers or UPI payments to a personal ID instead of a secure gateway. A 90% discount on the latest iPhone is almost certainly a trap. Stick to official websites and apps, and be wary of enticing offers forwarded on WhatsApp or social media.
Plan for High Server Traffic
Festive days like Dhanteras and Diwali experience a massive surge in online transactions, which can lead to payment failures, app freezes, and slow bank servers. It’s a common complaint among users when transaction volumes are high. While systems have improved, overload is still possible. To avoid getting stuck, don't leave your most important purchases for the last minute. Have a backup payment option ready, such as a different UPI app, a credit or debit card, or even some cash. This way, if one service is down, your festive plans aren't derailed.
Create and Track a Festive Budget
Digital payments make spending easy—perhaps too easy. The small, frictionless transactions can add up quickly, leading to post-Diwali financial stress. Before the season kicks off, create a simple budget for all your planned expenses: gifts, clothes, decor, and food. Use your UPI app's transaction history to track your spending against this budget. Seeing the numbers in black and white can help curb impulse buys. Many young adults find themselves overspending by thousands on small festive items before they even get to major purchases. Planning ahead is key to enjoying the festival without financial regret.
