Another Vande Bharat for the Valley
Indian Railways is set to introduce a third Vande Bharat Express on the crucial Jammu-Srinagar route. This development, confirmed by Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh in August 2026, responds to high passenger demand and aims to bolster connectivity in the region.
Currently, two Vande Bharat trains already operate between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar, having seen full occupancy since their services were extended from Katra to Jammu on April 30, 2026. The existing trains have been so popular that their coach capacity was increased from 16 to 20 to accommodate the rush. The new train, which will operate under the numbers 26407/26408, underscores the success of the service and the growing need for reliable, fast transport in the union territory.
A Key Stop Added in Udhampur
A significant feature of this new service is the inclusion of a stop at Udhampur's Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan railway station. This addition comes after strong demand from the local population, highlighting the railway's responsiveness to regional needs. The existing Vande Bharat services already stop at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal, but the Udhampur halt further integrates another major town into this modern rail corridor. This decision not only provides more travel options for the people of Udhampur but also reinforces the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project's goal of connecting all major population centres.
Slashing Travel Time Dramatically
For decades, the journey between Jammu and Srinagar was a gruelling 8-to-11-hour drive on the often-unpredictable NH-44, which is prone to landslides and winter closures. The Vande Bharat Express has completely changed this reality. The train journey cuts travel time to approximately 4 hours and 45 minutes, offering a reliable, all-weather alternative. This drastic time saving is a game-changer for tourists, business travellers, and local residents alike. Recently, the maximum permissible speed on the Katra-Banihal section was increased to 100 kmph, which will further enhance efficiency and reduce travel time, making the train an even more attractive option.
A Modern and Comfortable Journey
The Vande Bharat Express is not just faster; it offers a world-class travel experience. The trains are fully air-conditioned and feature ergonomic reclining seats, with rotating seats available in the executive class. Passengers can enjoy modern amenities like onboard Wi-Fi, GPS-based information systems, mobile charging sockets at every seat, and advanced bio-vacuum toilets. The sealed gangways allow for easy movement between coaches, and automatic doors enhance safety. With an onboard pantry providing hot meals, the journey across the stunning Himalayan landscape, including over the world's highest railway arch bridge over the Chenab River, is both comfortable and scenic.
Boosting Tourism and the Local Economy
The enhanced rail connectivity is a massive catalyst for Jammu and Kashmir's economy. The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link, now fully operational, provides all-weather access to the Valley, which was historically dependent on road transport. This reliability is expected to significantly boost tourism, including winter tourism, which often suffered from road closures. Beyond passengers, the railway is a vital artery for trade, enabling local products like apples, saffron, and handicrafts to reach national markets more efficiently while also ensuring a steady supply of essential goods into the Valley. This seamless movement of people and goods fosters economic integration and creates new opportunities for local businesses and farmers.
