Understanding the Monsoon's Mixed Signals
The big picture for the 2026 monsoon has been one of disparity. As of mid-September, the all-India monsoon deficit stands around 15%. However, this national average hides the real story. Key agricultural states like Bihar, Karnataka, Kerala, and Andhra
Pradesh have faced significant rainfall deficits. In contrast, recent weather systems have brought widespread and sometimes heavy rainfall to parts of central, eastern, and western India, including regions in Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, and Odisha. This patchiness means farmers in one district might be struggling with drought-like conditions, while their counterparts a few hundred kilometres away are dealing with waterlogging. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has noted these sharp variations, with the withdrawal of the monsoon expected to begin around September 19 from West Rajasthan.
Kharif Crops on the Edge
For Kharif crops, timing is everything. Many, including paddy, soybeans, cotton, and maize, are in their critical grain-filling or maturation stages. Inadequate soil moisture now can severely impact yield. The uneven rainfall has already put crops under 'dry risk' in a significant number of districts. For paddy, a lack of water at this stage can lead to poor grain development. Conversely, in areas receiving sudden, intense downpours, crops like maize and cotton face the risk of lodging (falling over) and root rot from waterlogged fields. This dual threat requires farmers to be incredibly vigilant, tailoring their response to local conditions, not national forecasts.
Water Management Is Now Paramount
Effective water management is the most critical task for farmers this month. In deficit regions, the priority is life-saving irrigation. Instead of flooding fields, farmers are advised to use efficient methods like drip or sprinkler systems to make every drop count. Conserving soil moisture is equally vital; practices like mulching with crop residue can help retain water in the soil. In surplus regions, the challenge is the opposite: drainage. Ensuring excess water is quickly removed from fields is essential to prevent root diseases and crop damage. Cleaning and preparing drainage channels before a forecast downpour can make a significant difference.
Nutrient Application and Pest Alerts
Rainfall patterns directly influence fertiliser use. Applying nitrogen-based fertilisers like urea just before a heavy downpour can lead to it being washed away, wasting money and polluting waterways. Farmers should wait for a break in the rain to apply top-dressings of fertiliser. In dry areas, nutrient uptake by plants is reduced, so applications should be done only when there is adequate soil moisture. The high humidity and intermittent rain also create ideal conditions for pests and fungal diseases. Farmers should actively monitor their fields for common monsoon-related issues and be prepared with appropriate control measures, consulting local agricultural extension services for specific advice.
Look Ahead to the Rabi Season
The amount of rainfall in September doesn't just affect the Kharif harvest; it sets the stage for the upcoming Rabi (winter) crop season. The moisture left in the soil after the monsoon withdrawal is a key factor for the germination and early growth of crops like wheat, mustard, and gram. Farmers in regions with good end-of-monsoon rains will be well-placed for Rabi sowing. However, those in deficit areas must start planning now. This might involve choosing drought-tolerant crop varieties or those that require less water. Conserving every bit of late-season rainfall in farm ponds and other storage structures can provide a critical buffer for the next cropping cycle.
