Your body has a built-in thermostat that plays a crucial role in managing your sleep-wake cycle. To prepare for sleep, your core body temperature needs to drop by about one to two degrees. This cooling process signals to your brain that it's time to rest,
triggering the release of melatonin, the hormone that governs sleep. Throughout the night, your body temperature continues to fluctuate slightly with your sleep stages. This natural process of thermoregulation is essential for achieving deep, restorative sleep. When this process is disrupted, so is your sleep.
How Humidity Sabotages Your Sleep
High humidity is the primary culprit behind monsoon sleep troubles. Humidity refers to the amount of moisture in the air. When the air is saturated with water vapor, as it is during the monsoon, it creates two main problems for your body's cooling system. First, it prevents your sweat from evaporating efficiently. Sweating is your body’s primary method of cooling down, but if the air is already moist, the sweat has nowhere to go. This leaves you feeling sticky and warm, preventing your core temperature from dropping as it should. This interference can increase wakefulness and reduce the time you spend in deep NREM and REM sleep, the stages critical for physical recovery and memory consolidation.
The Allergy and Air Quality Factor
Beyond making you feel warm and clammy, high humidity creates a perfect breeding ground for allergens that disrupt sleep. Mould and dust mites thrive in damp environments, often found in mattresses and bedding during the monsoon. For many, this can trigger allergies, asthma, and other respiratory issues, leading to congestion, coughing, and breathing difficulties that cause frequent awakenings. The very air in your bedroom can become an obstacle to a good night's rest.
Take Control of Your Sleep Environment
The ideal indoor humidity level for sleep is between 30% and 50%. To combat monsoon humidity, a dehumidifier is your best friend. It works by pulling excess moisture from the air, making it easier for your body to cool itself. If an air conditioner is an option, it also helps by both cooling and dehumidifying the room. For a lower-tech solution, ensure good ventilation. Use ceiling or table fans to keep air circulating, which helps with sweat evaporation and creates a cooling effect. Also, keeping curtains closed during the day can prevent the sun from heating your room, making it cooler at night.
Choose Breathable Materials
What you sleep on and in matters immensely. Swap out synthetic fabrics for lightweight, breathable materials like cotton or linen for your bedsheets and sleepwear. These natural fibres are moisture-wicking, meaning they draw sweat away from your skin and allow it to evaporate more easily, keeping you cooler and drier. Heavy quilts and thick blankets trap heat and moisture, so opt for a single, light cotton sheet or a very thin blanket. Reducing layers is key to improving airflow around your body.
Adjust Your Bedtime Routine
A few simple adjustments to your evening habits can make a big difference. Taking a cool or lukewarm shower before bed can help lower your body temperature and wash away sweat, leaving you feeling fresh and ready for sleep. Staying hydrated is important, but try to avoid drinking large amounts of liquid right before bed to prevent nighttime trips to the bathroom. It’s also wise to avoid heavy meals and intense exercise within a couple of hours of bedtime, as both can raise your core body temperature and interfere with the cooling process needed for sleep.
