First, Understand Your CIBIL Report
Before you can fix the problem, you need to know exactly what it is. Your CIBIL report is a detailed summary of your credit history, including loans, credit cards, and payment patterns. You are entitled to one free full credit report from each credit bureau,
including TransUnion CIBIL, every year. Obtain your report from the official CIBIL website and review it carefully. Check your personal details, account information, and payment history to understand what has lowered your score. This report is the map you will use to navigate your way back to good credit health.
Make All Payments on Time, Every Time
Your payment history is the single most important factor influencing your CIBIL score. Lenders want to see that you are a reliable borrower. If you have overdue bills, focus on clearing them immediately. For all current EMIs and credit card bills, make it a non-negotiable rule to pay them before the due date. Set up automatic payments or calendar reminders to ensure you never miss a payment again. Even one late payment can negatively impact your score, while a consistent record of timely payments is the fastest way to prove your creditworthiness.
Lower Your Credit Utilisation Ratio
Your credit utilisation ratio (CUR) is the amount of credit you are using compared to your total available credit limit. For example, if you have a credit card with a ₹1 lakh limit and a balance of ₹40,000, your CUR is 40%. A high ratio signals to lenders that you are heavily reliant on credit, which is seen as risky. A general rule is to keep your CUR below 30%. To improve your score, focus on paying down your credit card balances. This can have a relatively quick and positive impact, often within one or two months.
Check for and Dispute Any Errors
Mistakes on your credit report can unfairly drag down your score. These can range from simple typos in your personal information to more serious errors like incorrect overdue amounts or accounts that do not belong to you. If you find an inaccuracy, you have the right to file a dispute with CIBIL online. You'll need to provide details and any supporting documents. CIBIL will then coordinate with the lender to verify the information. Correcting errors is one of the quickest ways to see a potential jump in your score, with most disputes resolved within 30 days.
Build a Healthy Mix of Credit
Lenders prefer to see that you can responsibly manage different types of credit. A healthy credit mix includes both secured loans (like a home loan or auto loan) and unsecured loans (like personal loans or credit cards). If your credit history is thin or damaged, rebuilding can be a challenge. In such cases, a secured credit card—which is issued against a fixed deposit—can be a powerful tool. Using it for small purchases and paying the bill in full each month helps you build a fresh, positive payment history.
Be Patient and Consistent
Rebuilding a CIBIL score is a marathon, not a sprint. While fixing errors or lowering credit utilisation can yield results in one to three months, recovering from more significant issues like defaults takes longer. It typically takes at least six to twelve months of consistent, positive financial behaviour to see a significant improvement. Avoid applying for multiple new loans or credit cards in a short period, as each application triggers a 'hard inquiry' that can temporarily lower your score. Focus on stability and discipline.
