The Sweet Spot of Autumn
October and November are arguably the best months to visit the Andamans. As the monsoon recedes, it leaves behind incredibly lush green landscapes and washes the shores clean. The weather becomes pleasant, with comfortable temperatures typically ranging
from 24°C to 31°C. Crucially, the sea calms down, and the water clarity improves, making it ideal for underwater activities which often resume during this period. This shoulder season means you'll experience fewer tourists compared to the peak rush of December and January, allowing for a more peaceful and intimate exploration of the islands' beauty.
Getting There and Island Hopping
Your journey begins with a flight to Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair, the archipelago's capital. From there, the real island-hopping adventure starts. To reach Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep) and Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep), you'll rely on ferries. Several private operators like Makruzz, Green Ocean, and Nautika offer comfortable, air-conditioned catamaran services that can be booked online in advance. The journey from Port Blair to Havelock takes about 90 minutes to two hours. To get from Havelock to Neil, it's a shorter trip of about one hour. Government-run ferries are also available, though they are primarily for locals and have a more complex booking process. Planning your ferry route in advance, especially during the start of the tourist season, is highly recommended.
Havelock (Swaraj Dweep): An Underwater Kingdom
Havelock is the hub of adventure and marine exploration in the Andamans. Its underwater world is a kaleidoscope of vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life. Autumn's clear waters provide excellent visibility for scuba diving and snorkelling. Dive sites like Turtle Bay and The Slope are great for beginners, while more experienced divers can explore 'The Wall'. Even if you don't dive, you can still witness this beauty through a sea walk at Elephant Beach or by snorkelling. This beach, reachable by a short boat ride or a forest trek, is famous for its calm, shallow waters teeming with fish like clownfish and parrotfish. After a day of adventure, unwind at the world-renowned Radhanagar Beach (Beach No. 7), famous for its pristine white sand and breathtaking sunsets.
Neil (Shaheed Dweep): The Isle of Serenity
A short ferry ride away, Neil Island offers a complete change of pace. It's smaller, quieter, and embodies a rustic, laid-back charm perfect for unwinding. The island can be easily explored on a rented scooter or bicycle, taking you through sleepy villages and paddy fields. The beaches here are named after characters from the Ramayana. Bharatpur Beach is known for its gentle waves and is a great spot for swimming and glass-bottom boat rides to see the corals. For a spectacular sunrise, head to the secluded Sitapur Beach. The main attraction for sunset is Laxmanpur Beach, which reveals its stunning natural rock formation, known locally as the Natural Bridge, during low tide. Neil is the perfect antidote to modern hustle, a place to simply relax and soak in the tranquil coastal scenery.
Practical Tips for Your Autumn Escape
While autumn is pleasant, the weather can be transitional in early October, so packing a light raincoat is wise. Book your flights and popular resorts in advance, as prices start to climb with the onset of the tourist season. While network connectivity has improved, it can still be patchy on the islands, so download offline maps and any important documents. Carry sufficient cash, as ATMs can be limited, especially on Neil Island. Most importantly, practice responsible tourism. Avoid touching or standing on coral reefs and do not leave any waste behind to help preserve this fragile ecosystem for years to come.
