Master the Master List
The single most effective way to save precious seconds during a booking is by using IRCTC's 'Master List' feature. This tool allows you to pre-save passenger details—name, age, ID proof, and berth preference—directly into your IRCTC account. Instead of frantically
typing everyone's information as the clock ticks, you can auto-fill all passenger details with a single click. To create yours, log in to the IRCTC website or the Rail Connect app, navigate to 'My Account' or 'My Profile', and select the Master List option to add passengers. Do this a day or two before your booking day to ensure everything is correct and ready.
Know Your Booking Windows
Timing is everything. For general advance bookings, the window has been set to 60 days for most trains. General quota booking on the opening day starts at 8 AM. For last-minute travel, the Tatkal quota is your best bet. The Tatkal booking window opens one day before the journey. For AC classes (like 2A, 3A), the window opens at 10 AM. For non-AC classes (like Sleeper), it opens at 11 AM. Be logged into your account at least five to ten minutes before the designated time to get a head start.
Choose Your Payment Method Wisely
A slow payment gateway is often the difference between a confirmed ticket and a waitlisted one. While options like credit cards and net banking are available, they often require extra steps like entering OTPs, which consumes valuable time. For the fastest checkout, UPI is highly recommended as it often involves a quick approval on your phone. An even better option is using the IRCTC e-Wallet. By pre-loading funds into your e-Wallet, you can bypass the entire payment gateway and OTP process, allowing for a near-instant transaction.
Prepare Your Login and Aadhar
To ensure transparency and reduce misuse, IRCTC has made Aadhaar authentication mandatory for many booking types, especially Tatkal. Linking your Aadhaar to your IRCTC account is crucial. Ensure this is done well in advance, as it can sometimes take time to verify. An authenticated account not only speeds up the process but is a prerequisite for booking Tatkal tickets online. Also, stick to a single login session. Using multiple browsers or devices to log in with the same ID can cause your session to expire at a critical moment.
Keep Station Codes and Train Numbers Handy
Don't waste time searching for train names or station names during the booking rush. Major cities often have multiple stations (e.g., Delhi has NDLS for New Delhi, DLI for Old Delhi). Know the exact station codes for your origin and destination. Similarly, have the specific train number you are targeting written down. This allows you to quickly enter the details and proceed without fumbling through search results.
Have a Backup Plan: The Vikalp Scheme
What if, despite your best efforts, you land on the waitlist? Don't despair. Opt for the VIKALP scheme while booking. This facility, also known as the Alternate Train Accommodation Scheme, instructs IRCTC to consider you for a confirmed berth in another train on the same route if a seat becomes available. Opting for VIKALP doesn't guarantee a confirmed seat, but it significantly increases your chances by widening the pool of available trains. There are no extra charges, and it's a simple checkbox to select during the booking process.
