What is a Vistadome Coach?
Imagine travelling on a train with expansive glass windows and a transparent glass roof, offering an almost uninterrupted, 360-degree view of your surroundings. That is the experience a Vistadome coach offers. These specially designed carriages, manufactured
by the Indian Railways' Integral Coach Factory, are built for sightseeing. Key features include rotatable seats that allow passengers to face the direction of the best views, an observation lounge for a wider perspective, and modern amenities like GPS-based information systems and Wi-Fi connectivity. The goal is to transform a simple train ride into an immersive journey, putting passengers right in the middle of nature.
A Journey Through the Western Ghats
The Madurai-Guruvayur route has been specifically chosen for this new service because of its stunning natural beauty. The highlight of this journey is the picturesque Sengottai-Punalur section, which cuts through the Western Ghats. Passengers will be treated to panoramic views of lush green hills, dense forests, and mountain vistas, particularly as the train navigates the scenic Aryankavu pass. This route connects two major pilgrimage centres, Madurai in Tamil Nadu and Guruvayur in Kerala, making the journey as significant as the destinations themselves. The addition of the Vistadome coach is expected to be a major boost for tourism in the region, attracting nature lovers and families looking for a unique travel experience.
Schedule, Fares, and Train Details
This new service is being launched on a temporary trial basis. The Vistadome coach will be attached to Train No. 16327 Madurai-Guruvayur Express for journeys commencing from Madurai from October 22, 2026, to January 15, 2027. This service will be available on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. For the return journey, the coach will be on Train No. 16328 Guruvayur-Madurai Express from October 23, 2026, to January 16, 2027, on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. The basic fare starts at ₹515, with the cost for the full end-to-end journey being approximately ₹1,875. The train from Madurai (16327) departs at 11:35 AM and reaches Guruvayur the next day at 2:15 AM.
How to Book Your Scenic Seat
Given the novelty and the limited capacity of just 44 seats, demand for the Vistadome coach is expected to be very high. In fact, the inaugural journey on October 22 was reportedly sold out well in advance. Passengers can book their seats through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) or its mobile application. When booking, you will need to select the specific train number on a valid day of operation. Look for the 'Executive AC Chair Car' (EC) or 'Vistadome AC' (EV) class option to ensure you are booking a seat in the special coach. It is highly recommended to book your tickets as early as possible to secure a spot on this unique and visually spectacular journey.
