A Glimmering Golden Path
Dubai is preparing to unveil what is being billed as the world's first and longest walkway made of 24-carat gold. This shimmering new attraction will be located in the Dubai Gold District in Deira, the city's historic trading heart. The plan, announced
by district officials, is for the walkway to open before the end of 2026, with some suggesting it could be ready within the next two months. While the idea of a street paved with gold has long been a metaphor for immense wealth, Dubai intends to make it a tangible experience for residents and tourists. The project was first teased in January 2026 by developer Ithra Dubai as a 'Gold Street' to serve as a headline attraction for the newly launched Dubai Gold District.
The Vision Behind the Sparkle
This golden walkway is more than just an opulent path; it's a strategic move to cement Dubai's status as a global hub for both tourism and the gold trade. Rashid Al Harmoudi, a senior director at the Dubai Gold District, stated the project will offer a unique experience, allowing visitors to literally walk along a golden path. The initiative is designed to draw more visitors to the district, which already hosts over 1,000 retailers and welcomed shoppers from more than 147 countries in 2025. By creating such a distinctive landmark, Dubai aims to enhance its brand for luxury and provide a powerful visual symbol of its deep connection to the gold industry. The UAE is already the world's second-largest destination for physical gold trading.
From Concept to Reality
While the announcement has generated significant buzz, many of the practical details are still under wraps. Officials have not yet disclosed the walkway's exact length, the total amount or value of the gold being used, or the specific construction techniques that will ensure its durability. Creating a surface made of pure 24-carat gold that can withstand constant foot traffic presents considerable engineering and security challenges. It remains to be seen whether the path will be solid gold, gold-plated, or constructed using another method. The announcement was made alongside another gold-related achievement: two Guinness World Records for the world's heaviest and largest pair of gold earrings, highlighting the district's flair for headline-grabbing feats.
In the Heart of Old Dubai
The choice of location in Deira is significant. This area is the traditional centre of commerce in Dubai, home to the famous Gold Souk and Spice Souk. Visitors to the new golden walkway will be able to pair the experience with a visit to the bustling marketplaces and a ride on a traditional 'abra' boat across Dubai Creek. This situates the hyper-modern attraction within the rich cultural context of Old Dubai, creating a bridge between the city's past and its ambitious future. The project is also part of a wider expansion of the Dubai Gold District, which has seen a 20 percent increase in wholesale gold trading offices this year and is planning a major new exhibition for the gold and jewellery trade.
