Hunt for Hidden Roof Leaks
A storm is the ultimate stress test for your roof. While it's raining, the most direct way to spot a leak is to head to your attic with a flashlight. Look for drips, damp insulation, or dark stains on the underside of the roof decking. No attic? No problem.
Inside your home, scan ceilings and the top of walls for any new, yellowish-brown water stains, which are a classic sign of a slow leak that has finally soaked through. Bubbling or peeling paint near the ceiling is another major red flag. Catching a roof leak early can prevent widespread water damage, rot, and expensive structural repairs. While a small patch might be a DIY fix for some, most roof issues require a professional to ensure they are sealed correctly.
Inspect Your Gutters and Downspouts
Gutters are your home’s first line of defense against water damage, and a downpour is the perfect time to see if they're doing their job. Look outside to see if water is overflowing from the gutters rather than flowing freely through the downspouts. Overflow is a clear sign that they are clogged with leaves or debris. When gutters back up, water can seep behind your siding, rot the wooden fascia boards, and even pour down directly against your foundation, which can lead to serious and costly problems. After the rain stops, make it a priority to clear them out or schedule a professional cleaning. Also, ensure your downspouts are directing water at least six feet away from your home's foundation to prevent soil erosion and basement leaks.
Check Window and Door Seals
Windows and doors are common culprits for letting in both drafts and water. During a rainstorm, you can easily spot problem areas. Look closely around the frames for any visible water trickling inside or for moisture building up between double-paned windows. You can also run your hand along the seals to feel for dampness or cool drafts. Over time, caulking can crack and weatherstripping can become brittle, creating gaps for water to enter. These seemingly small leaks can damage walls, warp wood frames, and lead to mold growth. For a quick fix, you can apply new caulk or weatherstripping to seal the gaps and keep your home dry.
Test Your Sump Pump
If you have a basement or crawlspace, your sump pump is a critical defense against flooding. A heavy rainstorm is when it's supposed to be working its hardest, so it’s a good time to ensure it's functioning. You should hear it kick on periodically as groundwater levels rise. If it’s been raining heavily and your pump is silent, it’s a cause for concern. You can manually test it by pouring a bucket of water into the sump pit; the pump should turn on immediately, pump the water out, and then shut off. If it doesn't activate, check to make sure it's plugged into a working GFCI outlet. A failed sump pump during a storm can lead to a flooded basement in a matter of hours, so regular testing is essential.
Look for Foundation and Basement Issues
Heavy rain exerts immense pressure on your home’s foundation. This is the perfect time to head to your basement or walk the perimeter of your house to look for signs of trouble. Inside, inspect the walls for any new cracks, especially horizontal ones, or areas where water appears to be seeping through. A musty, damp smell is also a strong indicator of hidden moisture. Outside, look for pools of water that collect near your foundation. This indicates poor drainage or grading, which can saturate the soil and increase hydrostatic pressure against your foundation walls, leading to cracks and settlement over time.
