Forget swiping right. Finland has a new proposal for singles worldwide: a free, four-day culinary trip in February 2027. The catch? It all leads to a blind group dinner date designed to make you fall in love—with Finnish food.
What is the Finnish Dinner Date?
Visit Finland, the country's
tourism board, has launched a unique campaign called the 'Finnish Dinner Date'. It's inviting 16 single people from around the globe on an all-expenses-paid trip to experience the country's burgeoning food scene. The initiative will take two groups of eight winners to either Helsinki, the capital, or the Lakeland city of Tampere for a four-day immersive experience. The highlight of the trip is a group dinner where the international guests will be joined by a few local Finnish singles to share a meal. While romance isn't off the table, the stated goal is to foster a connection with Finland's culture and cuisine.
A Menu Crafted by the Nation
This isn't just any dinner. The menus are the result of a nationwide survey where Finns identified the dishes that best represent their regions. Top chefs then transformed these favourites into official tasting menus. The Helsinki menu is crafted by Adele Kinnunen, head chef at the prestigious Café Savoy, while the Lakeland menu is designed by Henry Tikkanen, a Bocuse d'Or representative for Finland. The campaign, 'Have Some Finnish', aims to put the country's food on the international map, highlighting its use of pure, wild ingredients like foraged berries, mushrooms, wild fish, and game.
The 'Pink Basket' Inspiration
The idea for the campaign was sparked by a uniquely Finnish phenomenon: the 'sinkkukori', or 'single's basket'. In some Finnish supermarkets, shoppers can pick up a pink basket to signal they are single and open to being approached. The story went viral internationally, inspiring Visit Finland to create a food travel experience around the same theme of facilitating low-pressure connections. The dinner date is less about formal matchmaking and more about bringing people together in a natural, communal way, which is a hallmark of Finnish hospitality.
How to Apply for a Seat at the Table
The application process is open to any single adult over 18 who is not a resident of Finland. To apply, candidates need to create a short video in English answering the question, 'What would you serve on a dinner date, and why?' The video must be posted to Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube with the hashtag #FinnishDinnerDate and by tagging Visit Finland's official account. Applicants also need to fill out a form on the campaign website. For those who are camera-shy, a private video link is also an option. But you'll need to be quick—applications close on November 10, 2026.
