Adopt a Satvik Diet
The foundation of a healthy Shravan is a satvik diet, which is simple, pure, and easy to digest. This dietary shift aligns with Ayurvedic principles, as the digestive system is considered weaker during the monsoon. Foods to include are fruits, milk products
like curd and paneer, and certain vegetables like bottle gourd, pumpkin, and potato. Vrat-specific flours such as kuttu (buckwheat), singhara (water chestnut), and rajgira (amaranth) are used as alternatives to regular grains. Sabudana (tapioca pearls) and samak rice (barnyard millet) are also popular choices. Foods to strictly avoid include onion, garlic, non-vegetarian items, alcohol, lentils, and regular table salt. Instead, use sendha namak (rock salt) for seasoning.
Prioritise Hydration
Staying hydrated is crucial, especially if you are fasting. While some devotees observe a strict 'nirjala' (waterless) fast, most should focus on consuming plenty of fluids. Drink water, coconut water, fresh fruit juices, and buttermilk throughout the day to maintain energy levels and prevent dehydration. Proper hydration ensures your body remains energised and your mind stays focused during spiritual practices.
Plan Your Fasting Meals
Planning your meals helps you avoid last-minute unhealthy choices and ensures you get balanced nutrition. Prepare dishes like sabudana khichdi, kuttu ki puri with aloo curry, or samak rice pulao. For snacks, opt for roasted makhana (fox nuts), fruits, and a handful of dry fruits like almonds and walnuts to keep you full and energetic. Avoid overeating after breaking your fast and steer clear of excessively fried or sugary packaged vrat snacks. A well-planned meal prevents energy slumps and keeps you feeling light.
Focus on Spiritual Wellness
Shravan is a month for spiritual cleansing and devotion. Start your day with a bath and wear clean clothes. Dedicate time for daily prayers, especially on Shravan Somvars (Mondays), which are highly auspicious. Chant the 'Om Namah Shivaya' mantra, read parts of the Shiva Purana, and meditate. Setting up a clean, quiet puja corner in your home can create a serene atmosphere for your daily rituals. These practices help calm the mind, reduce stress, and deepen your spiritual connection.
Incorporate Rest and Mindfulness
Fasting can be physically demanding, so it's important to listen to your body and get adequate rest. Ensure you get enough sleep to allow your body to rejuvenate. Beyond physical rest, practice mindfulness to keep your thoughts pure. Avoid anger, arguments, and negative speech. The goal of the fast is not just to abstain from food but also to discipline the mind and cultivate inner peace.
Maintain Personal Care
The monsoon season, which coincides with Shravan, can bring humidity and an increased risk of infections. Maintaining good personal hygiene is essential. Simple practices like regular bathing and wearing clean, comfortable clothing will help you feel fresh and positive throughout the day. A clean body contributes to a clear and focused mind, which is central to the observance of this holy month.
