Serving Size vs. Per 100g
One of the most common points of confusion starts with the very first line on the nutrition table: the serving size. Many brands list nutritional values both 'per serving' and 'per 100g'. Some consumers might glance at the 'per 100g' column and see a high
protein number, assuming that's what they get in a single scoop. In reality, a single serving is often much smaller, around 30 grams. Always check the 'per serving' value to understand how much protein you're actually consuming in one shake. This figure gives you a realistic picture of the product's protein content in a single use, while the 'per 100g' value is more useful for comparing the protein concentration between different brands.
The Protein Source Puzzle: Concentrate, Isolate, or Hydrolysate?
Not all whey protein is created equal. The terms concentrate, isolate, and hydrolysate refer to the level of processing and purity. Whey Concentrate (WPC) is the most common and least processed form, typically containing 70-80% protein, along with some lactose and fat. It's a great all-around option for most people. Whey Isolate (WPI) undergoes additional filtration to remove most of the fat and lactose, resulting in a purer product that's over 90% protein. This makes it ideal for those who are calorie-conscious or have lactose sensitivity. Whey Hydrolysate (WPH) is a pre-digested form of whey, usually made from isolate, where the proteins are broken down into smaller peptides for faster absorption. This makes it easy on the stomach and perfect for rapid post-workout recovery, though it's often the most expensive option.
Decoding the 'Proprietary Blend'
When you see the term 'proprietary blend' or 'protein blend' on a label, it should be a red flag. Legally, companies can group a mix of ingredients under a single blend name, listing only the total weight of the blend, not the amount of each individual ingredient. The ingredients must be listed in descending order of quantity, but this doesn't tell you the whole story. Often, this tactic is used to hide the fact that the formula is bulked up with cheaper, lower-quality protein sources, while only 'fairy dusting' the more expensive, premium proteins into the mix. Without transparency, you have no way of knowing if you are getting an effective dose of the ingredients that matter most. Quality brands are typically transparent about what's in their product and in what amounts.
The Specter of 'Protein Spiking'
A more deceptive practice is 'protein spiking', also known as amino spiking or nitrogen spiking. Standard protein tests don't directly measure protein; they measure nitrogen content. Since protein is naturally rich in nitrogen, this usually works. However, this system can be exploited. Unscrupulous manufacturers can add cheap, nitrogen-rich compounds—like individual amino acids such as glycine or taurine—to their powders. These additives artificially inflate the nitrogen reading, making the product appear to have a higher protein content on the label than it actually provides in a nutritionally meaningful form. While it's hard to be certain without a lab test, a red flag is seeing free-form amino acids listed high on the ingredient list.
Look Beyond the Protein Grams
A high protein count is great, but it's not the only thing that matters. The ingredient list tells a fuller story. Ingredients are listed by quantity, from most to least, so the protein source should be one of the first things you see. Be wary of a long list of ingredients, as it can indicate the use of fillers, thickeners, and artificial additives to mask a low-quality base protein. Also, check for added sugars, which can hide under names like dextrose, and artificial sweeteners if you're sensitive to them. A quality protein powder should have a short, understandable ingredient list with minimal unnecessary extras.
