The Unseen Flood of Moisture
It might not seem like much, but a single load of washed laundry can hold over two litres of water. When you hang these clothes to dry inside, all that water evaporates into the air. During the dry winter months, this might not be a major issue. But during
the monsoon, when indoor humidity in cities like Mumbai and Kolkata can already exceed 80%, you are essentially pouring litres of extra water into an already saturated atmosphere. This dramatically slows down drying time and creates the perfect environment for a host of unwelcome household guests.
A Breeding Ground for Allergens
That musty smell from clothes that take too long to dry is a sign of bacteria and mildew beginning to grow. This process can start in as little as six to eight hours in a humid environment. The excess moisture in the air doesn't just affect your clothes; it fosters the growth of mould on walls, ceilings, and furniture, and encourages the proliferation of dust mites. For anyone with asthma, allergies, or other respiratory conditions, exposure to these mould spores and dust mite allergens can trigger coughing, wheezing, and other serious health issues.
Start with a Smarter Spin
Effective drying begins in the washing machine. Before you hang your clothes, run them through an extra spin cycle at the highest speed your fabric can tolerate. A high-speed spin can remove a surprising amount of excess water, significantly cutting down the time your clothes need to hang indoors. For cottons, a speed of 1000-1200 RPM is effective, while delicates are better suited to 600-800 RPM. This single step ensures clothes are damp, not dripping, when you take them out.
Location and Ventilation are Key
Where you hang your clothes matters immensely. Avoid drying laundry in bedrooms or main living areas where you spend most of your time. Instead, choose a well-ventilated space like a utility area, a bathroom with an exhaust fan, or a covered balcony. The goal is to encourage airflow. If possible, create cross-ventilation by opening windows on opposite sides of the room (when it's not raining). Even placing a pedestal or ceiling fan near the drying rack will make a huge difference. Air movement is critical because it whisks away the humid air surrounding the clothes, allowing more moisture to evaporate.
Give Your Clothes Some Space
It’s tempting to cram as much as possible onto a drying rack, but overcrowding is counterproductive. When fabrics touch, moisture gets trapped between them, creating damp pockets where that musty smell can develop. Hang clothes with at least a few inches of space between each item. Using hangers for shirts, kurtas, and trousers can help maximise space and improve airflow around each individual garment. It's better to do smaller, more frequent loads of laundry during the monsoon than one large load that you can't space out properly.
Consider a Helping Hand
For those living in extremely humid areas or dealing with persistent dampness, a dehumidifier can be a game-changer. These appliances work by pulling moisture directly out of the air, drastically reducing drying time from days to mere hours. Running an air conditioner in the room can have a similar, albeit less direct, effect. For a more budget-friendly option, moisture-absorbing products like silica gel bags or even bowls of unrefined salt placed in the room can help manage ambient humidity to a lesser extent.
