Acknowledge the Festive Price Surge
The first step in smart budgeting is understanding the reality: festive travel is expensive. During peak periods like Diwali, Dussehra, and Christmas, demand for flights, trains, and hotels skyrockets. This surge can cause airfares on popular routes to
jump by over 50%. Bus fares can also increase by two to three times. Waiting until the last minute means you are competing with millions of others for limited seats and rooms, which inevitably leads to inflated prices. Accepting this reality is what motivates you to plan ahead and avoid the rush.
Set a Clear Destination and Budget
A vague goal is hard to save for. Instead of just 'saving for a trip,' decide where you want to go and who you're travelling with. Research the approximate costs for your chosen destination. Factor in everything: flights or train tickets, accommodation, local transport, food, shopping, and a buffer for unexpected expenses. Having a concrete number in mind, whether it’s ₹20,000 for a trip home or ₹1,00,000 for a family vacation, makes your savings goal tangible and easier to track. Many travel websites can help you estimate these costs quickly.
Create a Dedicated Travel Fund
Mixing your travel savings with your regular bank account can make it easy to spend the money accidentally. To avoid this, create a separate fund dedicated solely to your trip. This could be a high-yield savings account or, for a more structured approach, a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) in a mutual fund. A SIP allows you to invest a fixed amount every month. For short-term goals of one to three years, you might consider conservative options like short-duration debt funds. This disciplined approach helps your money grow steadily without interfering with your daily expenses.
Automate Your Savings
The most effective way to save is to make it automatic. Once you’ve decided on a monthly savings amount, set up an automatic transfer from your salary account to your dedicated travel fund. This 'set it and forget it' strategy ensures you are consistently putting money aside without having to rely on willpower. Whether it's a monthly SIP instalment or a simple bank transfer, automation builds your travel corpus in the background, reducing the temptation to skip a month or spend the money elsewhere.
Book Everything in Advance
The golden rule of saving on festive travel is to book early. For major festivals, you should aim to book flights and hotels at least two to four months in advance. For some of the busiest domestic flight routes during Diwali, the optimal booking window can be as early as 19 or 20 weeks ahead. Train tickets also sell out quickly. Early booking not only saves you from last-minute price hikes but also gives you more choices for preferred seats, rooms, and travel times. Don't forget to book your return journey at the same time, as waiting can lead to significantly higher fares for the trip back.
Be Flexible with Dates and Times
If your schedule allows, even a little flexibility can lead to big savings. Fares are typically highest on weekends and the days immediately preceding a major festival. Travelling on a weekday, like a Tuesday or Wednesday, is often cheaper. Flying on the day of the festival itself can also be more affordable, as most people prefer to arrive beforehand. Similarly, consider flying into a nearby, less busy airport and completing the journey by road. A slight adjustment to your travel dates or plans can often unlock significant savings.
