The Problem with Vague Recalls
In the past, food recall notices could be frustratingly general. A warning might mention a brand of snacks or a type of spice without specifying which batches or manufacturing dates are unsafe. This ambiguity often led to two undesirable outcomes: consumers
either ignored the warning, risking their health, or unnecessarily threw away perfectly safe products, leading to food waste and financial loss. Recent enforcement actions against companies for altering expiry dates and batch numbers have highlighted the need for greater transparency and consumer-facing tools. The core issue was the difficulty for a regular shopper to connect a broad public announcement with the specific item in their shopping cart or kitchen.
FSSAI's Digital Solution for Clarity
To solve this problem, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has enhanced its digital infrastructure. A key update is the launch of a 'Food Recall' functionality within the existing FoSCoS (Food Safety Compliance System) platform. This system now requires Food Business Operators (FBOs) to provide highly specific details when initiating a recall, including the exact product name, pack size, date of manufacture, and, most importantly, the batch or lot number. This information is then made publicly accessible, creating a clear and verifiable trail for every recall.
How to Check a Product Yourself
As a consumer, you can now take a more active role in ensuring your food is safe. The process is straightforward. First, locate the FSSAI license number, batch number, and manufacturing date on the product's packaging. Then, visit the official FoSCoS portal (foscos.fssai.gov.in). The portal has a public-facing section for active food recalls. Here, you can browse the list of recalled items and compare the specific batch numbers and manufacturing dates listed in the notice with the details on your product. If the numbers match, you know the product is unsafe and should be returned or disposed of as per the recall instructions. If they don't match, your product is not part of that specific recall.
Why Batch Numbers Are Crucial
A batch number is a unique code that identifies a specific group of products manufactured at the same time, using the same ingredients and equipment. This traceability is critical for food safety. If a contamination issue—like the presence of pesticide residue or an undeclared allergen—is discovered, the batch number allows manufacturers and regulators to pinpoint exactly which products are affected without recalling everything. For consumers, it means recalls can be surgical and precise. This latest FSSAI directive strengthens this system by making batch-level recall information a mandatory part of public communication, moving beyond internal tracking to direct consumer empowerment.
A Stronger System for All
This move towards detailed public recall notices is part of a wider enforcement drive by the FSSAI to increase accountability in the food industry. By mandating that companies provide transparent and specific recall data, the regulator makes it harder for businesses to issue vague warnings or hide the scale of a problem. For consumers, it fosters trust and provides a reliable, official source to verify safety concerns. It encourages a culture of vigilance, where shoppers are empowered with the information needed to make safe choices for themselves and their families. This system not only helps in efficiently removing unsafe food from the market but also serves as a deterrent for non-compliant practices.
