A Game-Changer for Kashmir Connectivity
The long-awaited Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project has revolutionised travel to the Kashmir Valley. As of mid-2026, this engineering marvel is operational, directly connecting Jammu with Srinagar. This allows travellers to board a train
and journey through the stunning Pir Panjal mountains, a feat that includes crossing the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge. Indian Railways has introduced multiple Vande Bharat Express services on this route, cutting down travel time significantly and offering a comfortable, all-weather alternative to road travel. Recently, a third Vande Bharat train was approved for the Jammu-Srinagar route to meet the high passenger demand, underscoring the route's popularity.
The Vande Bharat Route and Experience
The Vande Bharat Express covers the distance between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar in approximately 4 hours and 45 minutes. The existing services, which began regular operations in May 2026, have key stops including Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan Udhampur station, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal. The journey itself is a spectacle, offering panoramic views of the Himalayas. Onboard, passengers can expect modern, aircraft-like amenities. The trains are fully air-conditioned with comfortable, ergonomic seating available in two classes: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC). Other facilities include onboard Wi-Fi, a GPS-based passenger information system, clean bio-vacuum toilets, and automatic doors. Catering services are typically included in the ticket price, providing meals and snacks during the journey.
Booking Your Tickets and Fares
Booking tickets for the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat is straightforward. You can reserve your seats through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) or the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app. Bookings typically open 60 days in advance, and given the high demand for this scenic route, it's highly advisable to book as early as possible. Fare expectations can be guided by current prices. An AC Chair Car ticket generally ranges from ₹665 to ₹730, while the more spacious Executive Chair Car costs between ₹1,280 and ₹1,340. These prices are subject to change and dynamic pricing, so it's best to check the IRCTC portal for the most accurate and up-to-date fares for your travel dates.
From Srinagar Station to Your Destination
Upon arriving at Srinagar Railway Station, located in the Nowgam area, you will be about 10-12 kilometres from key tourist spots like Dal Lake and the city centre. The drive can take around 25 to 35 minutes, depending on traffic. For a hassle-free transfer, especially if you are traveling with family or luggage, pre-booking a taxi is the most convenient option. App-based cab services and local taxis are readily available outside the station. From here, you can easily access your hotel or begin your exploration of Srinagar's famous attractions, such as the Mughal Gardens or the Shankaracharya Temple.
Crafting Your Kashmir Itinerary
With the train getting you to Srinagar efficiently, you have more time to explore the valley's treasures. A popular 5-day itinerary often includes two days in Srinagar for local sightseeing and a Shikara ride on Dal Lake, followed by day trips or overnight stays in Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Gulmarg, known for its Gondola ride, offers stunning Himalayan views, while Pahalgam, the 'Valley of Shepherds', is famous for its serene riverside landscapes. From Srinagar, you can hire a private taxi for these excursions, which provides flexibility to stop at scenic spots like the saffron fields of Pampore or the ancient ruins at Awantipora en route to Pahalgam.
When Is the Best Time to Go?
Kashmir is a year-round destination, with each season offering a unique experience. The best time to visit depends on your preference. Spring and summer (March to August) are ideal for pleasant weather, with blooming tulip gardens and lush green meadows. Temperatures during this period range from a comfortable 15°C to 30°C. This is the perfect time for sightseeing and adventure activities. For those who dream of a winter wonderland, the months from December to February offer heavy snowfall, especially in places like Gulmarg, which transforms into a premier skiing destination. Be prepared for cold temperatures, which can drop below freezing.
