The festive season brings a familiar buzz of shopping and celebration, but this year, a noticeable shift is underway. Indian consumers are trading impulse splurges for smarter, more deliberate purchasing, signalling a new era of conscious consumption.
From Splurge to Strategy
The era of buying for the sake of buying appears to be winding down. This festive season, households across India are adopting a more measured approach. While festive spending continues, it is becoming more selective. According to a YouGov India report, 26% of consumers plan to stick to their usual budget but shop smarter, while another 23% intend to cut back on non-essential purchases. This marks a departure from previous years, which were often characterised by extravagant, last-minute shopping sprees. The sentiment is echoed by a LocalCircles survey, which projects a 6% decline in total urban festive spending for 2026 compared to 2025, even as a majority of families still plan to shop. The new mantra isn't about spending less, but spending better.
The Rise of the Value-Conscious Shopper
Several factors are driving this change in behaviour. Persistent inflation and concerns over household budgets are making consumers more cautious about discretionary spending. This economic pressure is coupled with a broader evolution in the Indian consumer, who is now more informed and discerning than ever. Quality, durability, and utility are increasingly influencing purchase decisions over sheer brand appeal or flashy discounts. A survey found that product quality was a key factor for 49% of consumers when choosing between brands. This shift is evident across categories. In electronics, shoppers are gravitating towards higher-end variants with better features, often financed through no-cost EMIs, which makes premium products feel like a smart, affordable upgrade. This 'affordable premium' mindset is key: shoppers want the best they can get, but they want it to make financial sense.
What 'Quality' Means in 2026
For today's festive shopper, 'quality' is a multi-faceted concept. It’s not just about the price tag or a luxury logo. It’s about longevity and practicality. Consumers want products that last beyond a single season. This is especially true for categories like apparel, which remains the top festive spending priority for a majority of households. Shoppers are thinking in terms of complete looks rather than individual items. In home appliances, energy efficiency, good design, and advanced technology are features that can command a premium, but only if the consumer sees a clear, tangible benefit. Even in the beauty space, quality has overtaken price as the single most important purchase driver, a significant shift in a market historically dominated by value-sized products.
Budgeting Becomes Mainstream
The focus on thoughtful purchasing is underpinned by more disciplined budgeting. With an estimated 83% of urban families planning to use a portion of their savings for festive shopping, every rupee is being allocated with care. This doesn't mean an end to big-ticket purchases, but it does mean they are more planned. For instance, while buying intent for home appliances like washing machines has softened, it has surged for passenger vehicles. Online sales continue to grow, with projections for 2026 reaching up to ₹1.55 lakh crore, a significant increase from 2025. However, this growth is expected to be driven by a higher volume of orders rather than larger individual basket sizes, suggesting that consumers are shopping more frequently but more cautiously each time.
