The Problem with Chasing the Burn
In the world of fitness, it's easy to equate the feeling of a muscle burning with an effective workout. When it comes to our abs, this often translates into high-repetition circuits with minimal rest. The goal becomes feeling that intense, localised fatigue.
However, this approach primarily trains muscular endurance, not necessarily strength or stability. Doing hundreds of crunches is not an effective way to get more defined abs and may even hurt your back due to the repeated spinal flexion. While endurance is one component of fitness, treating every core workout like a race against the clock neglects the primary and more crucial functions of your core.
What Your Core Actually Does
Your core is far more than the 'six-pack' muscles (the rectus abdominis) that get all the attention. It's a complex system of deep and superficial muscles that act as a central stabilizing unit for your entire body. Think of muscles like the transverse abdominis, which wraps around your midsection like a corset, and the multifidus muscles, which support and stabilize your spine. The main job of this system isn't to create movement by crunching, but rather to resist it. Its primary function is to provide a stable base so your limbs can move powerfully and efficiently, and to protect your spine from potentially harmful forces.
Strength vs. Endurance: A Tale of Two Goals
Core strength is the ability to maintain a stable spine under a heavy load, while core endurance is the ability to hold that stability for a prolonged period. A fast-paced circuit of 30 sit-ups trains endurance. Resisting the pull of a heavy cable trying to twist your torso trains strength and stability. While both have their place, many people over-index on endurance without ever building a solid foundation of strength. Research suggests that the abdominal muscles have a significant percentage of fast-twitch muscle fibers, which respond well to strength-oriented training with higher loads and fewer reps. Simply doing endless reps often means you're not challenging these fibers enough to stimulate real strength gains. It's about quality of contraction, not just quantity of movement.
A Smarter Approach: Anti-Movement Training
A more effective way to build a resilient, functional core is to focus on what experts call "anti-movement" exercises. These drills train your core to do its main job: resist unwanted motion. The three key categories are: Anti-Extension, which is resisting the urge to arch your lower back (think planks and dead bugs); Anti-Rotation, which is resisting twisting forces (think Pallof presses); and Anti-Lateral Flexion, which is resisting side-bending (think a one-sided loaded carry or suitcase carry). This type of training builds deep stabilizer strength, improves the transfer of energy from your lower body to your upper body, and, most importantly, helps reduce the risk of injury by protecting your spine.
Building a Better Core Workout
Instead of another frantic circuit, try slowing down. For your next core session, pick two or three exercises and focus on control. Aim for fewer, high-quality reps or timed holds. For example, you could perform three sets of a 30-45 second plank (anti-extension), three sets of 10-12 controlled bird-dogs per side (anti-rotation), and three sets of a 30-second suitcase carry on each side (anti-lateral flexion). The key is to brace your core tightly and move with intention, preventing any unwanted movement in your pelvis or spine. Focus on feeling the deep muscles engage to hold you steady, rather than just feeling the surface-level burn of endless crunches. Like any other muscle group, your abs need rest, so training them with focus 2-3 times per week is more effective than daily, rushed sessions.
