A Window to the Western Ghats
Imagine travelling through misty mountains and lush forests with an uninterrupted, panoramic view. That is the promise of the Vistadome coach. These specially designed carriages feature massive glass windows, a see-through glass roof, and seats that can
rotate 180 degrees. This allows every passenger to face the direction of the best scenery, ensuring nobody misses the dramatic landscapes. The coach, an Executive AC chair car, combines luxury with an immersive nature experience. It is equipped with modern amenities, including an infotainment system and charging sockets, but the real entertainment is right outside the window. This service, attached to the Madurai-Guruvayur Express, is the first of its kind for this part of Southern Railway and is expected to be a major draw for tourists, families, and photographers.
A Journey Through Natural Splendour
The Sengottai-Punalur section is more than just a railway line; it's a destination in itself. Winding its way through the border of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the route is a masterpiece of engineering set against a backdrop of breathtaking natural beauty. Passengers will journey through dense green forests, numerous tunnels, and across majestic viaducts. The undisputed highlight is the historic 'Pathimoonu Kannara Palam', or the 13-Arch Bridge, an architectural marvel from the British era. This iconic structure, along with the scenic Aryankavu Pass, offers cinematic views that have long made this route a favourite among rail enthusiasts. With the addition of the Vistadome coach, travellers can now experience the region’s waterfalls, valleys, and vibrant flora and fauna in unparalleled comfort and style. The train is scheduled to move at a slower pace through the ghat section, with brief stops at several small stations, allowing everyone to soak in the views.
Reviving a Heritage Route
This new service breathes modern life into a route steeped in history. The Kollam-Sengottai line was the first railway in the erstwhile Travancore kingdom, commissioned in 1904. Originally a metre-gauge line built by the British to transport spices and timber, it was a vital link between the Malabar Coast and the southern headquarters in Chennai. For years, the line was a cherished piece of heritage before it was closed for gauge conversion to bring it up to modern standards. The conversion of the challenging Punalur-Sengottai ghat section was delayed due to its difficult terrain but was finally completed, reopening in 2018. The introduction of the Vistadome coach is the culmination of these efforts, transforming a historic trade route into a premier tourist experience that honours its rich past while looking to the future.
How to Experience the Ride

In the return direction, it will be available on Train No. 16328 (Guruvayur–Madurai Express) on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays, from October 23, 2026, to January 16, 2027.
