Day 1: Arrival and Kandy’s Cultural Heart
Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) and take a bus or shared taxi to Kandy. The journey itself is an introduction to the island's lush landscapes. Once in Kandy, check into a budget-friendly guesthouse or hostel, many of which can be found
for under $20 a night. After dropping off your bags, spend the evening exploring the area around Kandy Lake. As dusk falls, make your way to the famed Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa). The temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is most atmospheric during the evening puja (ceremony). The entrance fee for foreigners from non-SAARC countries is around 2,000 LKR. Remember to dress modestly, covering your shoulders and knees.
Day 2: Exploring Kandy and its Surroundings
Dedicate your second day to further exploring Kandy. Start with a morning visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, a short bus ride from the city center. The sprawling gardens are home to an incredible variety of flora and are perfect for a long, peaceful walk. In the afternoon, you can hike up to the Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha statue for a panoramic view of the entire city. For dinner, skip the tourist traps and dive into a local eatery for some authentic kottu roti or rice and curry, which are both delicious and incredibly affordable. This is a day for soaking in the local atmosphere at a relaxed pace.
Day 3: The Scenic Journey to the South Coast
Today is a travel day, but it’s one of the most scenic parts of the trip. While there's no direct train from Kandy to Mirissa, the best budget option is to take a train from Kandy to Colombo (Fort Station) and then switch to a coastal line train heading towards Matara, getting off at Mirissa or a nearby station. This journey can take around 6 to 8 hours but offers breathtaking views, first of the hill country and then of the sparkling Indian Ocean. The total cost for this train journey is minimal, making it the perfect choice for a backpacker. Upon arrival in Mirissa, you'll find plenty of affordable guesthouses a short walk from the beach. Settle in and enjoy the sound of the waves.
Day 4: Sun, Surf, and Sunset Views in Mirissa
Wake up to the coastal charm of Mirissa. This town is all about the beach life. If you've ever wanted to try surfing, now is your chance. The bay's gentle waves are ideal for beginners, and you can rent a board or take a lesson for a reasonable price, often starting around $25. Spend the afternoon relaxing on Mirissa Beach, swimming, or exploring the nearby shores. In the late afternoon, take a walk to the now-famous Coconut Tree Hill for a postcard-perfect sunset view. For dinner, head to one of the many beachfront restaurants where you can enjoy fresh seafood with your feet in the sand.
Day 5: Whale Watching and Departure
For your final day, consider an early morning whale watching tour, which Mirissa is renowned for. From November to April, you have a high chance of spotting blue whales, the largest animals on Earth. Tours typically cost around $50 per person and include breakfast. It's a splurge compared to other activities but a truly unforgettable experience. If you'd rather save the money, you could spend the morning snorkeling with turtles at a nearby spot like Polhena Beach. Afterwards, pack your bags and begin your journey back to Colombo for your departure, filled with memories of Sri Lanka's diverse beauty.
