Northern India on High Alert
The Himalayan and northwestern regions are bracing for significant rainfall this weekend. The IMD has predicted fairly widespread to widespread rainfall for Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand through the next several days. Heavy rainfall is expected
at isolated places across these states, with alerts specifically issued for potential landslides and rising river levels in hilly areas. In particular, Uttarakhand is expected to see heavy rain through July 18. For those in Punjab and Haryana, the forecast includes thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, with heavy showers at isolated places until at least July 12. While Delhi may not see heavy downpours, the sky is expected to remain cloudy with a chance of evening thundershowers, coupled with high humidity.
Eastern and Northeastern Regions to See Intense Showers
The monsoon is particularly active in the east and northeast. The IMD has issued alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, and East Uttar Pradesh on July 12, with these conditions expected to persist for the next few days. States like Assam and Meghalaya are also under alert, with Meghalaya facing a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in some regions. Authorities have warned of potential flash floods and localised flooding, which could disrupt transport and daily life. People in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha are also advised to be cautious, as heavy rain is predicted intermittently over the weekend and into the next week.
What About Central and Southern India?
The monsoon's intensity appears more subdued over parts of central and southern India for the next week. While widespread heavy rain isn't the primary forecast, scattered thunderstorms are possible across coastal Karnataka and Kerala. The IMD forecast notes that overall rainfall activity is likely to be subdued over west central and south peninsular India for the next six to seven days. Konkan and Goa, however, are likely to experience fairly widespread rainfall through the week. Residents in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh may see thunderstorms with gusty winds, but the widespread, heavy downpours affecting the north and east are not expected here.
How to Plan Your Weekend Safely
Given the forecasts, it is wise to build flexibility into your weekend plans. If you are in a region with a heavy rain alert, particularly in hilly areas, it is crucial to avoid non-essential travel. Landslides have already been reported, leading to road closures. In cities, heavy downpours can lead to waterlogging and severe traffic disruptions. Before heading out, check the latest local advisories from the IMD and traffic updates. Keep an eye on live weather maps and apps for real-time information on rain and thunderstorms. For those in affected areas, this might be the perfect weekend for indoor activities. If you must travel, ensure your vehicle is in good condition, allow for extra travel time, and never attempt to drive through heavily waterlogged streets.
