The Irritant: Giant Milkweed (Calotropis gigantea)
Commonly known as ‘Aak’ or ‘Madar’, this rugged plant is often seen growing wild along roadsides and in wastelands. While it has uses in traditional medicine, all parts of the plant are toxic. The primary danger comes from its thick, milky latex, which
oozes out when the plant is broken. This latex is a potent irritant. Contact with skin can cause redness, inflammation, and even blisters. Accidental contact with the eyes is particularly dangerous and can lead to severe inflammation, corneal damage, and temporary vision loss. While rarely fatal if handled correctly, the discomfort it causes is significant, making it a plant to admire from a distance. Always wear gloves if you need to handle or remove it.
The Deceiver: Rosary Pea (Abrus precatorius)
The seeds of the Rosary Pea, known as ‘Gunj’ or ‘Ratti’, are undeniably beautiful. Their striking bright red colour with a single black spot has made them popular for use in jewellery and ornaments. However, these seeds contain one of the most potent toxins known in the plant kingdom: abrin. Abrin is a toxalbumin that can be fatal even in minuscule doses, working by inhibiting the body's ability to create protein at a cellular level. Swallowing a single, well-chewed seed can be lethal for an adult, and even more so for a child. The hard seed coat offers some protection, and if a seed is swallowed whole, it might pass through the digestive system without releasing its poison. But if the seed is crushed or broken before ingestion, symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and internal bleeding can begin within hours, leading to organ failure and death.
The Common Killer: Oleander (Nerium oleander)
Oleander, or ‘Kaner’, is one of the most common ornamental shrubs in India, prized for its beautiful flowers and resilience in hot, dry climates. Yet, it is dangerously toxic. Every single part of the plant—leaves, flowers, stems, and sap—contains cardiac glycosides, such as oleandrin, which directly interfere with heart function. Ingesting even a small amount can lead to severe symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, a slowed or irregular heartbeat, and can quickly progress to cardiac arrest and death. Cases of poisoning are common, both accidental and intentional. Even the smoke from burning oleander wood can be toxic. Given its widespread presence in gardens, parks, and along highways, it is crucial to educate children about its dangers and ensure pets are kept away from it.
The Notorious Poison: Castor Bean (Ricinus communis)
The Castor Bean plant, from which castor oil is derived, is another common sight in India. While the oil itself is safe, the beans are not. They contain ricin, a toxin so potent that it has been explored as a chemical warfare agent. Similar to abrin, ricin is a toxalbumin that stops protein synthesis, leading to cell death. The toxin is released when the bean is crushed or chewed. Ingesting just a few chewed beans can be fatal for a child. Symptoms of ricin poisoning are severe and include internal bleeding in the stomach and intestines, vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, and can lead to severe dehydration, organ failure, and death within days. The indigestible seed coat means swallowing a whole bean may not cause harm, but the risk is too great to take any chances.
The Hallucinogen: Datura (Datura stramonium)
Known as ‘Dhatura’ or Devil's Trumpet, this plant is recognisable by its large, trumpet-shaped white or purple flowers. It holds a place in religious rituals, often offered to Lord Shiva. However, all parts of the plant, especially the seeds, are highly poisonous, containing powerful alkaloids like atropine and scopolamine. Datura is infamous for its use by criminals to stupefy and rob victims, as its tasteless juice can be easily mixed into drinks. Ingestion leads to an anticholinergic toxidrome, causing dry mouth, dilated pupils, blurred vision, rapid heartbeat, delirium, and terrifying hallucinations. In higher doses, it can lead to respiratory failure, convulsions, and death. Several incidents have been reported in India where accidental consumption, sometimes due to misinformation on social media, has led to severe poisoning.
