Experts note that roles in AI/ML engineering, AI governance, cloud architecture, and cybersecurity are commanding significant salary premiums, sometimes 20-35% higher than traditional software roles. Between 2022 and mid-2026, the Indian IT sector saw approximately 83,100 AI-related hires, significantly outpacing the 31,921 jobs lost or reduced due to AI integration. However, this has also meant a slowdown in entry-level hiring, as many junior tasks are now being automated. The message is clear: specialisation is the new key to career growth.

The demand is not just for coders, but for a new class of AI-fluent professionals. Companies are aggressively seeking talent with skills in AI model development, machine learning operations (MLOps), prompt engineering, and data science. But it's not purely technical. There's a growing need for individuals who can combine AI expertise with deep domain knowledge in a specific industry, like finance or healthcare. Furthermore, as AI becomes more integrated into business, roles related to AI governance and ethics are becoming critical. So-called 'soft skills'—like creative problem-solving, critical thinking, and the ability to collaborate and lead teams—are also more valuable than ever, as these are human abilities that AI cannot replicate.

India's IT giants are not standing still. They are in a race to reskill their massive workforces to stay competitive. Companies like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro have launched huge internal initiatives to train hundreds of thousands of employees in generative AI and related technologies. For instance, these three companies collectively scaled up their use of Microsoft 365 Copilot to over 300,000 employees in under six months, signalling a major shift toward embedding AI into daily workflows. NASSCOM reports that over two million professionals have already been upskilled in AI, with a significant portion gaining advanced capabilities. These firms are transforming from service providers into 'AI orchestration partners,' helping global clients navigate their own AI transitions.

While the transition presents challenges, it also offers a historic opportunity. Just as the Y2K bug helped showcase India's IT prowess to the world, the AI revolution could elevate the industry from a service provider to a global innovation partner.
