The headline-making research from Columbia University provides a clear and concerning link between chronic, mild sleep loss and weight gain. In a controlled six-week trial, researchers took adults who normally slept seven to eight hours and had them cut
their sleep by about 80 to 90 minutes per night. The results were small but significant: on average, participants gained about a pound (roughly 0.5 kg) during the six-week period of sleep restriction. They also became more sedentary. This wasn't a case of extreme sleep deprivation, but a reflection of a common pattern for many busy adults, making the findings particularly relevant.

Crucially, the researchers found that this increased intake was not matched by an increase in energy expenditure. In fact, sleep loss often leads to the opposite. When you're tired, you're less likely to engage in physical activity, from structured workouts to simple daily movements. This combination of eating more while moving less creates a clear calorie surplus that, over time, leads directly to weight gain.

Losing around 80 minutes of sleep might not sound like much, but as the research shows, its effects are cumulative. An extra 300-400 calories per day can easily lead to a pound of weight gain in just a couple of weeks.
