A Historic Launch
In the early hours of September 4, 2026, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the advanced Earth Observation Satellite-05 (EOS-05) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. This was not just another satellite launch;
it marked a historic first for India, placing a dedicated imaging satellite into a high-altitude geosynchronous orbit approximately 36,000 km above the Earth. The mission's success, carried aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket, was a significant achievement, especially following the unsuccessful launch of a similar satellite, EOS-03, in 2021. Described by ISRO's chairman as a "strategic satellite," EOS-05 is poised to equip India with an unprecedented ability to monitor its landmass and surrounding waters.
The Geostationary Advantage
The key to EOS-05's "persistent view" is its orbit. Most earth observation satellites operate in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), circling the globe hundreds of kilometres up and capturing images as they pass over an area. This means they can only revisit the same location periodically. EOS-05, however, is in a geosynchronous orbit, matching the Earth's rotation. This allows it to remain seemingly stationary over the South Asian landmass, providing a constant watch. While India has long used geostationary orbit for communication and meteorology satellites, EOS-05 is its first dedicated imaging satellite to operate from this vantage point, a major technological leap.
From Snapshots to Near-Live Feed
The difference between LEO and GEO observation is like the difference between taking scheduled photographs and monitoring a live video feed. LEO satellites provide valuable, high-resolution snapshots, but with significant time gaps between them. EOS-05 provides a near-constant watch. According to ISRO, the satellite can capture images of selected areas every five minutes and scan the entire country every 30 minutes. This allows ground control to monitor evolving situations in near real-time, a crucial advantage for tracking dynamic events. Whether it's a fast-moving cyclone, a spreading forest fire, or unusual activity along a border, the ability to observe the event as it unfolds is the game-changing capability that EOS-05 delivers.
