that grants you a 30-day, double-entry stay. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date. Once you land at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) near Colombo, you can exchange Indian Rupees for Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR), though carrying some US dollars can also be useful. For staying connected, grabbing a local SIM card at the airport is your best bet for affordable data.
Day 1: Arrival and Kandy's Sacred Heart
After landing in Colombo, your adventure begins with a journey to Kandy. The most budget-friendly option is the train from Colombo Fort station, a scenic ride that takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. Alternatively, air-conditioned buses are available and take around 3-4 hours. Once in Kandy, check into one of the many backpacker-friendly hostels like Hipsters Hideout Lounge or Kandy City Hostel. After settling in, head straight to the city's main attraction: the Sri Dalada Maligawa, or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The evening ceremony (puja) is a powerful cultural experience. Afterward, take a peaceful stroll around Kandy Lake as the city lights begin to twinkle.
Day 2: Exploring Kandy's Green Expanse
Dedicate your second day to exploring the areas around Kandy. Start your morning with a visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, a sprawling haven of magnificent trees, orchids, and spice gardens. You can spend a good few hours wandering its beautiful avenues. In the afternoon, you have a couple of choices. You could visit one of the nearby tea plantations to learn about the history of Ceylon tea and enjoy a fresh cup, or you could hike up to the Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha statue for a panoramic view of the entire city. In the evening, consider catching a traditional Kandyan dance performance for a vibrant dose of local culture.
Day 3: The Scenic Journey to Sunny Mirissa
Today is a travel day, but it’s one of the highlights. While the full Kandy-to-Ella train ride is famous, your journey south is just as beautiful. The most practical route is to take a train from Kandy to Colombo Fort and then switch to a coastal line train heading towards Matara, getting off at Mirissa. The entire journey can take around 6-7 hours, but the views of the Indian Ocean from the train are worth it. Upon arriving in Mirissa, the vibe immediately shifts from cool hills to laid-back beach town. Check into a popular hostel like JJ's Hostel or Satori Beach Hostel, both known for their social atmosphere and proximity to the beach. End your day with a seafood dinner right on the sand.
Day 4: Beach Life and Sunset Views in Mirissa
Wake up to the sound of waves and get ready for a day of sun and sand. Mirissa Beach is perfect for swimming and relaxing. If you're a surfer or want to learn, the nearby Weligama beach is ideal for beginners. One of Mirissa's most famous attractions is whale watching (best from November to April), a thrilling experience if you're visiting in season. In the late afternoon, make your way to the now-iconic Coconut Tree Hill. It’s a short walk from the main beach and offers the most stunning sunset views in the area. As dusk falls, the beachfront restaurants light up with candles, offering the perfect setting for your last night.
Day 5: A Glimpse of Galle and Departure
On your final day, wake up early for one last dip in the ocean. If you have a late evening flight, consider a quick trip to the nearby Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site just a 30-minute bus ride away. This historic walled city is a maze of charming cobblestone streets, Dutch colonial buildings, art galleries, and cafes. You can spend a couple of hours exploring before heading back. From Mirissa or Galle, you can take an express bus or the train back to Colombo. Allow at least 3-4 hours for the journey to the airport, giving you plenty of time to catch your flight home with a bag full of memories.
