Pick the Right Train for Daytime Views
While the headline mentions the Mandovi Express, and it is a fantastic choice, the key to seeing waterfalls is travelling during daylight. The Mandovi Express (10103) leaves Mumbai's CSMT in the morning, offering spectacular views as it travels towards
Goa. However, for the most famous waterfall, Dudhsagar, the train's route doesn't pass directly by it. For the iconic view of Dudhsagar falls, you'll need to be on a train that travels on the Hubli-Madgaon line, such as the Amaravati Express. The Mandovi Express is renowned for its overall scenic journey through the Konkan region, flush with countless smaller, yet stunning, monsoon-fed waterfalls.
Hack 1: Choose Your Seat Wisely
For the best views on the Konkan route, a window seat is non-negotiable. When travelling from Mumbai to Goa on trains like the Mandovi Express, the right side of the train (in the direction of travel) generally offers more expansive views of the valleys and distant hills. However, the most dramatic waterfalls often appear on both sides, sometimes cascading down rock faces just metres from the train. Experienced travellers often hover near the open doors of the coach (with extreme caution) for an unfiltered, panoramic view and a refreshing spray of mist. Booking in AC coaches will give you cleaner and larger windows, but non-AC coaches allow you to open the windows for a more immersive experience.
Hack 2: The Dudhsagar Detour
The Mandovi Express runs on the Konkan Railway line, but the world-famous Dudhsagar Falls is on a different route managed by South Western Railway, between Kulem and Castle Rock. If Dudhsagar is your primary goal, you must plan a separate trip. The safest and only legal way to see it in full monsoon glory is from a passing train on that specific line, as jeep safaris and track-walking are banned during this season for safety reasons. You can take a local train from Madgaon towards Kulem. When travelling from Kulem towards Castle Rock, the best view of the falls is from the right side of the train.
Hack 3: Timing Is Everything
The magic of the monsoon on the Konkan route is at its peak from June to October. This is when the landscape is at its most lush and the waterfalls are gushing. Konkan Railway operates a special monsoon timetable during this period, often from mid-June to the end of October, which involves reduced speeds for safety. While this might slightly increase your journey time, it's a blessing in disguise for sightseers, as the slower pace allows more time to soak in the breathtaking scenery. Hack 4: Pack for a Monsoon Train Journey
Packing smart can make a huge difference. A waterproof jacket is essential, even if you are in an AC coach, for those moments you want to stand at the door. Carry a waterproof bag or cover for your camera and phone. A power bank is a must, as you'll be draining your battery taking photos and videos. Bring a cloth to wipe the mist and condensation off the window for clearer shots. While the Mandovi Express is known for its good catering service, carrying your own snacks and water is always a good idea.
Hack 5: Safety on the Monsoon Route
The Konkan Railway is an engineering marvel, but the monsoon brings challenges. Be extremely careful when standing near open doors; the train can lurch unexpectedly, and the ground below is often a steep drop. Never lean out too far.
