For nearly two decades, the names MS Dhoni and Stephen Fleming have been synonymous with Chennai Super Kings. Fleming, who joined as a player in 2008 and became coach in 2009, built a legacy of remarkable consistency. Under his guidance, CSK became one
of the IPL's most successful franchises, winning five titles and reaching a record 10 finals. However, the team's recent form has been a concern. After their last title win in 2023, CSK failed to make the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, an uncharacteristic slump for the Yellow Army. Following what the franchise called "open and honest discussions," both sides mutually agreed to part ways, marking the franchise's biggest transition since its inception.
The Dhoni Factor
While a new coach will be on the sidelines, the shadow of MS Dhoni looms large. Though he didn't play in the 2026 season due to injury, his influence is undiminished. Reports suggest Dhoni, in a potential new mentor role, will have complete control of the 'cricket side of affairs' and will play a major part in selecting Fleming’s successor. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that the management will consult with both Dhoni and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad before finalising the appointment. This makes Dhoni's 'vote' the most critical piece of the puzzle. The new coach must not only have tactical expertise but also the ability to align with Dhoni's vision and manage the unique culture of the franchise.
Contender 1: The Insider's Choice
Many believe CSK need not look far. Michael Hussey, the team's current batting coach, is a strong internal candidate. Affectionately known as 'Mr Cricket', Hussey has been with the franchise for years, first as a star player and then as a coach since 2018. Former India selector Kris Srikkanth has publicly endorsed him, arguing that Hussey's deep familiarity with the team's culture makes him the "automatic choice." Promoting from within would ensure continuity and a seamless transition, preserving the core values that Fleming and Dhoni established. Hussey understands the 'CSK way' better than any external candidate.
Contender 2: The Modern Tactician
If CSK opts for a fresh perspective, former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum is a name generating significant buzz. Known for his aggressive, revolutionary approach to white-ball cricket, he could be the perfect candidate to reinvigorate the team. Some analysts feel CSK's traditional methods have seen them fall behind other evolving teams, and McCullum's 'Bazball' philosophy could provide a much-needed jolt. He has prior IPL coaching experience with Kolkata Knight Riders and has a connection to CSK, having played for the team. However, his current role as England's white-ball coach could complicate his availability.
Contender 3: The Super Kings Family
Another contender with deep CSK roots is Albie Morkel. The former South African all-rounder was a key player for Chennai during their early title-winning years. He was recently appointed head coach of the Joburg Super Kings, CSK's sister franchise in the SA20 league, directly succeeding Fleming in that role. This move is seen by many as a clear signal of the management's faith in his coaching abilities. Morkel is a crowd favourite who understands the franchise's emphasis on creating a family-like environment. His appointment would be a popular choice, blending nostalgia with a forward-looking vision.
