What is the MDAC and Why is It Mandatory?
The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, or MDAC, is a compulsory online pre-arrival form for all foreign nationals entering Malaysia, including Indian passport holders. Introduced on December 1, 2023, it has replaced the traditional paper-based landing cards
to streamline the immigration process. Think of it as your digital handshake with Malaysian immigration before you even land. It is not a visa, but a mandatory declaration that provides authorities with your personal, travel, and accommodation details. Even with visa-free travel, completing the MDAC is a strict requirement. The best part? The MDAC is completely free of charge; always use the official government portal and avoid any third-party websites that ask for payment.
When and Where to Fill the Form
The timing for your MDAC submission is critical. You must complete and submit the form online within the three days (72 hours) immediately preceding your arrival in Malaysia. For example, if your flight lands in Kuala Lumpur on a Friday, you can submit the form anytime on the preceding Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Submitting it earlier than three days will lead to it being rejected by the system. The form must be filled out on the official Malaysian Immigration Department website. Be wary of unofficial sites that might look similar. You can find the correct portal by searching for "Malaysia Digital Arrival Card official website" or navigating directly to the Malaysian Immigration Department’s page.
Information and Documents You Will Need
To ensure a smooth application process, gather the following information before you start. The details you enter must match your travel documents exactly to avoid any discrepancies at immigration. You will need: a valid Indian passport with at least six months of validity from your date of arrival in Malaysia; your personal details, including your full name as it appears on your passport, date of birth, and nationality; your confirmed travel itinerary, which includes your date of arrival, date of departure, flight number, and port of entry (the airport you are landing at); and the full address of your accommodation in Malaysia, including the hotel name, street, city, and postal code. Having these details ready will make the online submission process quick and easy.
A Step-by-Step Guide to Filling the MDAC
Navigating the form is straightforward. First, visit the official MDAC portal and click 'Register'. You will be prompted to enter your personal information like your name, passport number, and date of birth. Next, fill in your travel details. A key field that often causes confusion is the 'Last Port of Embarkation'. This refers to the last city you departed from before flying to Malaysia, not necessarily your original home city. For instance, if you fly from Delhi to Bangkok and then from Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur, your last port of embarkation is Bangkok. After entering your travel and accommodation details, carefully review all the information for any errors, especially in your name and passport number. Once you are sure everything is correct, submit the form.
After Submission: What to Expect
Immediately after a successful submission, you will receive a confirmation email. This email contains a PIN and a link to download your completed MDAC as a PDF. It is highly recommended to save a digital copy (screenshot or PDF) of this confirmation on your phone. While printing is not mandatory, having a digital copy ready can be helpful if immigration officers request it. For first-time visitors to Malaysia, after submitting your MDAC, you may need to enroll and verify your passport at a manual immigration counter upon arrival. On subsequent visits, you may be eligible to use the autogate facilities for a much quicker entry process. Remember, the MDAC is for a single entry only; you must fill out a new one for each trip to Malaysia.
